Just how dead is the RCA (Yellow Red White) cable standard?

Xanthe_2871

My car has two back set screens. They both take RCA video in. Until now I have been using a Wii to put something on those screens, but to make that work I need a special battery to act as an expensive capacitor to keep the Wii from losing power when I start my engine. I'm tired of this, so I've decided to take a Windows 10 tablet (which had it's own battery inside) and connect that to the screens. This way I can show live TV via YouTube on the screens (the Wii gets YouTube but not live streams), I can emulate games with USB controllers, and all without needing to worry about the "computer" shutting off every time I start my car between trips.

Only one issue, the tablet puts out HDMI, not RCA. I figured this would not be a big issue, I'd just buy a converter/adapter at the store. Ha! Best buy didn't carry any. Wal-mart didn't either. Radio shack, well my local one shut down, I think they all are now, so that's not an option. Target? Nope. Big lots? Nope! Maybe a car place, like O'Reilly? Not a single adapter to be seen. Office Depot had them, online. But if I'm going to buy online, I might as well use Amazon, it will be a lot cheaper. I want this in my hands now; I don't want to wait. After calling all these stores, plus Sears, Kmart, Staples, Home Depot, Flying J, Pep Boys... I found one.

Fry's Electronics had one. Just one. And it was $44.50! On Amazon they go for $10, on eBay for $8, and on Aliexpress for $4! No way am I paying that much just to have it now!

So, to my question, how dead is RCA? I mean, my 2010 Honda uses it. I have a friend with a 2013 Nissan that uses it. Yet no one seems to carry the cables, adapters, or parts needed to use it. Am I going crazy here? :o

Yes, it's 2871 as in the year 2871. I traveled all this way, back in time, just to help you. And you thought your mama lied when she said you were special-_-

how dead is RCA?

Very much dead.

The only reason it's still alive today, is for people like you who still have devices that only uses it.

RCA is the actual connector video transmission methods such as composite video use. While composite is pretty dead, the RCA jack is still quite useful and is used pretty much anywhere analog connections are, especially with audio equipment. It is also sometimes used instead of toslink for digital standards such as S/PIDF.

Buy an hdmi to VGA active adapter, then use a vga to rca adapter (much more common) to make the connection.

Yes, I do. Its like on snapchat when someone responds an hour later and you have no idea what they are talking about. But its a matter of a minute. The only reason i look at my text is so i know what i'm talking about.

The connectors (at least for audio) are still pretty common but the yellow one that carries video is super legacy by now.  Very few devices will output that, and nothing new takes it as an input - well, at least not without also offering something more modern.

Solve your own audio issues  |  First Steps with RPi 3  |  Humidity & Condensation  |  Sleep & Hibernation  |  Overclocking RAM  |  Making Backups  |  Displays  |  4K / 8K / 16K / etc.  |  Do I need 80+ Platinum?

If you can read this you're using the wrong theme.  You can change it at the bottom.

That might be cheaper, maybe, but it would take up more space. Since this is for my car, I care more about the space. But I appreciate it.

Actually, come to think of it, I did ask about this as well as HDMI to component and component to composite. Best Buy doesn't carry anything RCA, at all.

Last time I really used the RCA cable on the regular was August 5, 2015. So yeah, pretty dead. Other than that, I have my original Xbox at my dads cause he doesn't have internet, but other than older electronics and old TVs, its deader than the Ford Probe.
