My opinions on VR in it's current state, should YOU buy into it?

Yes actually if you read the whole post...i do recommend to order a 3rd sensor for full 360 tracking from floor to ceiling on an area i would say 8'X8' or slightly less...ideally thats what i use and it's perfect...7'7' and i do also recommend to buy HDMI 2.0 and USB 3.0 extensions on amazon (use google to know which one to order, they dont all work) or Oculus store has the 12' replacement cable for 50$ or 60$ i believe...extensions cost 22$US on amazon. 3rd sensor to order on oculus store...oculus store has no shipping fee or taxes to pay in most areas in us and canada. The price you see on oculus store is the price you pay.

sure!! i forgot about this thread for a while (sry), here is my setup i have two sensors in front (one on top of the PC and one on the guitar amp), 1 in the back corner (pic 2) and cable extentions for my rift now cable is about 12 to 14ft long not sure exactly...i have soft rubberized tiles on the floor for comfort in games where i play standing such as onward for example which is AMAZING to play on this...and racing wheel (logitech) for project cars 2

The monitor is a 27'' 1440p Gsync predator, for other games and desktop use:

well i love the idea and only having tryed it for short times elsewhere im thinking about getting one for a long time but first id need a new gpu so lets wait and see what nvidia brews up. also from what i have lastly seen im a bit disappointed about the support in games. id really love for every new AAA game to support it at least in some way. games made specifically for vr have seemed a bit dull and do feel mor like mobile game concepts. id love to play mass effect or far cry or gta or that kinda stuff you know what i mean.

also prices have come down to what i would call resonable rit + touch bundle is like 400-450 ish around here and you can find great deals on used sets of people who decided its not worth it to them or theyre just not that into it anymore.

but i would need some way to have it out of the way like linus showed in his video on how to stealth your vr setup.

right now im kinda torn because i just checked out microsofts mixed reality and that looks pretty awesome too so for me ill firstly get a new gpu and then game compatibility will decide which one im goin for

980ti/1070/1070ti are great for VR...

games are getting good in VR...there are many games that can only be played in VR that are top notch games...here to illustrate my point some games worth playing in VR

Robinson : The journey ...made with Crytek's Cryengine 3 the one they used for crysis 3...it's EPIC:

Red Matter is a good example of modern adventure/exploration game in VR...it's very polished and it looks awesome in full 3D, very fun gameplay as well:

There are so many games to play on Steam and Oculus store you can spend all your freetime in VR and then some at this point.

As someone who owns an Oculus Rift, my best experiences so far are VRChat, Airtone, DolphinVR, and Skyrim VR.

I think that the current screendoor effect is a boon for low res or low fidelity assets. But there are cases which I wish I could see more clearly.

VR sickness has not been bad for me at all.

I mean to buy Beat Saber and buy or try many other games, soon. But Airtone is the best rhythm game I've tried so far.

DolphinVR is just, wow. Best way to play Gamecube and Wii games ever. Super Mario Galaxy is unbelievable. I can't stop playing Mario Kart Wii in VR, either. I don't want to go back to playing Mario Kart Wii outside of VR, again, either. It's boring in comparison!

I never have been an Elder Scrolls person. Some of their design choices are.. not my thing. I think the game I played most was a heavily modded Oblivion, and that was only for about 24 hours before I put the game down. But with Skyrim VR I am well on my way to putting in those huge numbers of hours I've heard some people have played. Modding still goes a long way to making the game better, especially for me as someone who doesn't find the character designs pleasant. Walking around is nice, though, and it's one of the nicest big games available to play. Lots of content, lots to explore. Definitely going to put a lot of time in this just exploring and doing things, while I wait for a proper JRPG to come out in VR.

I would say though, that it is a lot more fun shooting arrows that slashing with a sword, typically.

And VRChat is basically my life now. Woefully unoptimized, though. That would be my biggest criticism of VRChat, they're using an outdated version of Unity. And if you're susceptible to VR sickness, the frames can get really bad really easily.

My Rift S review after using it for about 6 hours tonight...

The screen is MUCH cleaner and sharper than rift CV1 or Vive...also better than samsung odyssey + in terms of clarity...LCD screen look noticeably sharper than pentile oled screens...The lenses are also much improved, no more god rays and much larger sweet spot.

Nice upgrade for racing sims and most games actually...BUT...the tracking doesnt work too well at times in FPS shooter games like onward and pavlov for example...in fact this is a big minus IMHO. A rift with 3 sensors tracked a lot better still. But in most other games it does just as well so long as you don't need to bring your hand next to your face to aim.

Nice build quality, more comfortable headset i tried...very balanced but the very soft foam facial interface they chose makes me sweat and i don't like it...i'll need to upgrade it to something better...it's too soft and swoochy.

80hz feels nice i don't feel any difference from the pervious 90HZ and it turns out it's easier to hold a steady 80FPS than 90FPS so you can still use supersampling and high details and make the images super sharp and detailed...at a higher resolution.

CV1 to Rift S i would say feel like going from a 1080p to a 1440p monitor in a way, but all around you the whole world look sharper and nicer...it's amazing.

it's worth EVERY penny though, especially if you don't already have your VR setup you'll have an absolute blast with this, it's awesome overall...I highly recommend.

If you have a lot more money to spend OR if you have a VIVE VR setup and you'd re-use the base stations you have and maybe the wand controlers for a little while...then i would wait for the Valve index instead BUT here in canada a full kit with stations and controlers will retail for 1300$CAD (999$USD) which is too much for me personally. Rift S is 549$ CAD (399$ US) and they chard 0$ tax and 0$ shipping from oculus store directly, 3 days it was here coming out from Louisville, KY, United States...comes with all you need in the box, long cable on the thing and all.

I recommend Ryzen 5 1600 or core i7-3770 CPU or better.

GTX 1060 6GB or RX 580 8GB or better for GPU

(ideally a 1080 or a 2060, but for simulations and more advanced VR even an overclocked 1080ti is nice to have)

@i_build_nanosuits Thanks for the review!

I've been considering upgrading to the Rift S as well as potentially Navi or RTX to help drive it.

Is the tracking really that much worse for true room scale where your hands may need to go to the side of your head? That sounds like a deal breaker.

It is worth mentioning that those with RTX cards do get some perks like much smoother ASW and passthrough+ rendering thanks to Turing. I would love to see someone review the difference.

@Jon Jon IN FACT the problem is i wasn't aware that you need a playspace with just the right amount of light for the rift s cameras to work their best.

I'm used to play in the dark with only the lights from the computers with the original rift...now if your room is too dark, or too bright, the tracking won't work very well on the rift S...onward and pavlov are absolutely playable imo...you just get used to it i guess, you slowly learn to tweak your aiming down sight style and you're right there...

it's a great upgrade IMHO unless FPS games are you number 1 type of games you play (i do a lot of sim raging and sports and other simulations as well so...)

Latest Oculus update 1.39 completely fixed EVERY tracking related issues...now it's phenomenal, it works even better than my CV1 with 3 sensors...it's EPIC. @Jon Jon

You can now put your hands anywhere close to your head and face and it tracks 100%...pavlov and onward never felt that good.

It went from crappy and barely useable to flawless tracking across the board in no time flat...thanks OCULUS!

I'lll have to re-demo it!

I went to my local Microsoft Store a few weeks ago, and was not impressed with the tracking, specifically in Robo Recall.

it's all bloody good now...it's unbelieveable that they were able to fix it just like that with the software...i mean, it was pretty bad so i tought it was the hardware that was a problem...but now it works just as good as the old rift.

it's so depressing to read ignorant shit like that, it hurts.

people commenting on things they THINK they know about, have you even tried it?! have you even taken the time to go to Steam and check the boxes for the games that are compatible with rift and vive...i can tell you right now there is 87 pages of games that support VR for both vive and rift and there are new games coming out and being developped everyday and you can buy them either on oculus store or on steam...do you know how many millions of these VR headsets are out in the wild already? do you know how alive and well the multiplayer is for many of these games? well...I KNOW...i play them...and there is no shortage of players or games to play, both single player and multiplayer and both on rift and vive...and there really aren't that many exclusives anymore...all you say is bullshit man...for real!

I agree, comments like his frankly piss me off. A few years ago, I purchased a cruiser motorcycle. Well, one of my former riding buddies who is hardcore into sport bikes told me, "Well, you're not going to be able to do the riding YOU want to do with it" His assumption that I want to ride like an idiot, doing 70-80 mph on country back roads just like them enlightened me that I no longer am interested in riding with them ever again. 'Kind of' the same comparison...

Anyways, I don't have a top of the line system and I'm using a pretty low-mid grade RX 570 video card right now. The nice thing is down the road, I can maybe pick up a better graphics card and still use the Oculus. Even though I can't run every game with high detail, I can play Star Trek Bridge Crew, superhot, Robo Recall, (Elite dangerous - once I learn how the hell to play it) and Onward for hours. I mean, I have to force myself to stop because I'll be playing it all night and not see my wife...LOL.

VR really is still in its infancy stages, I look forward to where it is 10-15 years down the road.

10-15 years down the road, I expect the headset pieces to be more like bulky goggles and less screens attached to your face and the controllers are just straight up gloves.

I think those are fully realistic expectations.
