FX 9590 or Haswell Upgrade

Sooo, i've seen the FX 9590 known as pretty beefy CPU and i want to upgrade soon, is it worth going for an FX 9590 or going for a new Haswell chip as i already have an Haswell board

Current CPU: i5 4460

I know skylake is pretty cheap, but i don't use my PC enough to spend a few hundred quid on it

Haswell, Less money for cooling and electricity with better performance, especially if you get an overclocking model.

definitely, go for an overclocking model or K skew CPU

If you want to go AMD get an FX 8350 and just overclock it. It will run more efficient than the 9590 and for less money. However, a Ryzen 3 or even 5 would be the better choice for a budget build. What is your actual budget?

^ this.

Not sure who said the 9590 was a "beefy" CPU but ... yeah ...

Your 4460 is already faster than the 9590, so that would be a downgrade or at best, a sidegrade, not an upgrade ;

probably said said its beefy because it eats 220watt and delivers poor performance per watt xD lol

Better get the i7 4770 than the FX, if you have the courage you can find Sandybridge Xeons which aren't bad

If you want a CPU upgrade, you could consider going to an i7-4770.  I don't recommend a 4790 though.  Even though it's a little better, there is a huge price jump.

Alright fair enough guys,

I won't get it then, i had the idea when i watched Austin Evans' video on the 9590, he said it was beefy and could challenge most modern CPU's,

I guess not then....

Probs go for an 4790k then

Seeing you already have a Haswell motherboard, there is no way in which switching all the way over to AM3+ and a 9590 is going to make sense. It's cheaper and better to get a higher end CPU supported by your current motherboard. As long as you don't have the worst possible 1150 motherboard, you actually have it pretty easy to upgrade on the cheap.

For gaming. You both forget to add "for gaming", which is what you meant :P (or at best "in single-threaded performance").

I'm not saying that's not the relevant metric for OP, though.

I would suggest to check the date of that video to properly translate "modern". Also, especially at current de-stocking prices, it has a really good multithreaded performance for the money (although nothing you can't get from an overclocked FX-8xxx). However, you need to be in a rather specialized use case to benefit the most from it. From a general use perspective, and especially for gaming, it's  a rather mediocre CPU, which is in line with its price (€89 over here), but unless you already have a compatible motherboard there isn't a good reason not to go with a newer platform, even if it were to provide the same performance for the same money. It would benefit you down the road the same way you benefit now from the possibility of putting a Haswell i7 or a Xeon and get pretty close to the best there is (at least as far as quad cores goes).

The 9590 really really really sucks. Get a 4770k and call it a day.
