randomly losing connection to ONLY steam

Wasn't sure if this is the right place to post it but here we go

I have an issue where I randomly lose connection to only steam, everything else is fine, but I can't reconnect to steam until I restart steam.
I've tried
Reinstalling steam
adding firewall exceptions and turning off firewall
putting my PC in a DMZ on my router
using wired and wireless connections
turning flow control off

a fresh reinstall of windows
and quite a few others that I can't remember and I still get this issue. Any ideas?

you may find doing some port forwarding on your router could fix it

 

what sorta connection are you on, if its an academic network or similar they may block all steam downloads off the network.
