Wiping an SSD outside of Windows

I'd like to wipe my SSD and I'd like to do it with it being the only drive in the system. I know I could download some Linux distro and boot off a USB and wipe it that way, but are there any easier ideas?

just do ubuntu on a usb then select the live option and use disk/usb formatter. it is just as easy as windows. built into ubuntu already

I want to completely erase the drive, not just format it. And I know I can just make a live Linux USB, I was looking for alternatives that were lazier. I could also dig out a SATA cable and plug in a second drive that I need to install windows on anyway, but I don't feel like it.

Linux is the easiest way lol.

What do you mean completely erase the drive? Are you gonna sell it?

 

If not, open cmd, then type in "diskmgmt" (no quotes)

 

Right click format and uncheck quick format, this will force windows to write over everything with zeroes.

When you're done, simply right click on the drive and click "delete volume".

I'm going to sell it, and that doesn't quite work if it happens to be the only drive in the system.

I think some bioses allow you to nuke the drive if its an SSD. What motherboard do you have?

I just checked my bios and I didn't see anything -- MSI H81m-P33.

Ah ok. I'm pretty sure ASUS bioses can do it. I think your best option at this point is to just boot some lightweight linux distro.

In the case you're booting a live linux, I'd recommend Hiren's boot disk. Lots of goodies in it, but it emulates windows XP.

 

In there you'll see lots of useful software but more specifically "Darik's Boot and Nuke" which is amazing for your purpose.

If you have a Windows installation disc/usb you can also remove it during the installation screen.

Some ssd companies like Crucial offer in their software the ability to "sanitize" a drive. See if that is a possibility. Maybe you can use the a ssd software, like the one mentioned earlier, with another computer around. The first thing that comes to mind is you don't want to burn up all the writes on that ssd. I'm sure you are aware of that though.

Instructions for frustration management:  

1) Sit at desk.   2) Repeatedly slam forehead against desk.

An extra 250GB of writes should be completely irrelevant considering most SSDs can handle hundreds of terabytes of writes.

But if you use a program like DBAN... well $h!t, You might as well throw the thing away.

I wasn't sure of your experience or knowledge. You are right, though. Just thought it might helpful to mention software that companies like crucial offers to us users.
