Also, you might want to take a look at X99 boards right now. As x299 is getting more widespread, Newegg and other sites are clearing out stock of X99 boards. There are also a lot of refurbs floating about, something I did when I bought an ASUS refurbished X99 deluxe off of Ebay for $120. The board is very nice! Xeons are not as cheap on X99 as they are on the X58 platform sadly, though I still thought it was worth mention.

I don't think you can OC much, if at all tho. But, if you need lots and lots of cores, then X99 is a good platform.

Yeah @CUDA_Cores is the master for that chipset in the forum, and i found a $140 X99-A motherboard

Exactly, since the cheapest xeons are 2xxx series which don't OC. However, my board does have the TPU chip, which can allow me to do the auto overclock. Maybe asus can pull some magic out of its butt and overclock my Xeon better than I can. I will look into it and share the results.

I hope no one takes it from the freegeek shop before I do. I just don’t have the money right now, I’m going to ask the person manning the desk if I can reserve it. I know I will buy it at some point.

They are selling it in a combo too for a really good price. $95 for an i7-950, 6gb of ocz gold, and the board as well as an intel stock heatsink. Fucking legendary

Oh wow, that board looks great. Watercooling the chipset might actually make some sense with x58... mine gets quite hot at 240 BCLK already.

Just got 10 e5640s for 12.50€+5€ shipping. Here is hoping at least one of them does 5 GHz as 2 cores less should produce a bit less heat... I’ll also see if I can organise a PCI GPU and some faster RAM so I don‘t have to worry about raising the PCIe clock, as I believe that is currently my limiting factor (I can boot 240 BCLK at 110, and 250 at 115, but I don‘t really want to run the later for longer than a couple minutes). Probably gonna switch out the thermal compound on my Chipset too while I‘m at it.

Xeon e5649@4.4 GHz on Asus Rampage II Extreme or Gigabyte x58a-OC (whatever I feel like to set up at a time) , 6x4 GB Kingston HyperX 1600, Gainward GTX 670 Phantom, Samsung 840 Evo 240 GB, BeQuiet L8 530W

Also, I just remembered that I compiled the newest bioses of most X58 boards into one zip file a while ago. I thought you guys might enjoy it , so I decided to share it here. It also has all the utilities for applying the bioses as well as instructions on how to flash them.

I got bioses for boards from Asrock, Asus, Biostar, EVGA, Gigabyte, Intel, MSI, and Sapphire.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5ovrrGliZffS3B5TnZHQ0JYUW8/view?usp=sharing

(I think the version I uploaded is missing the MSI eclipse plus, let me know if you want that.)

That's probably a good idea. Though there was a reason why I didn't include the SR-2, and that was because it's technically an Intel 5520 chipset motherboard, not an X58. However, it still definitely falls into the same category. I will likely do another for dual socket 1366 or 5520 boards in general. Thanks for pointing out.

Yes, 5520 and 5500. All 1366 platforms use the ICH10 southbridge, which handles "all the other crap" (most of the rear io and stuffz), but the northrbridge/IOH is where it differs. 5520 offers 2 PCIe x16 Gen 2 connections, while 5500 offers only 1. Also 5500 talks to the southbrdige with 2 pcie x4 gen2 connections, while 5520 talks with only 1. Confusing...

Can't tell if that's a good or bad thing. Whatever the case may be, I think it's ok to talk about the theoretical mechanics of a platform without physically owning it. I think the only aspect of it that you can't discuss to people until you've actually done it is overclocking though. Youtube tutorials don't always translate to success or good advice
