Disabling Hard Drive in Windows 10?

Cyberspirit

Hey i want to turn off my hard drives when i'm not using them because they are pretty damn loud compared to everything else in my Pc.

I looked around for a way to disable/turn off Hard Drives without unplugging them and someone suggested simply disabling them in the device manager.

I do know that you can set a time in Power setting to spin down a drive after a while but even if i do that Windows keeps spinning them up randomly.

I could just set it to spin down after a minute or so but people have warned me that doing so will damage my drives in the long run.

There are two Hard Drives in my system one is for games and downloads the other is for backups so the second i'm not using very often.

Ps.: As you can see i'm not good with grammar so if you have any tips for that i'll gladly take them :$

HDD can't never be turned off. The motor is constantly spinning.

The correct term is spin down i guess. I don't care what it does as long as it stays quiet.

Well, it can't be completely turned off. I have it set to never spin down, when idle it stays pretty quiet with it's low hum, but I have put my ears next to the case to actually hear it.

Might just be because my Pc is on my desk or perhaps the case isn't the best but mine are really loud.

you could also use Crystal disk to set the AAM/APM settings, it will make you dives seek slower so you dont hear clicking, just the drive spinning.

if you want to go that rout i can help

That's nothing compared to the Seagate Cheetahs.

It would be nice if there was some kind of support build into Windows that enables you to set certain stations on "stand-by": they'll only be accessed by the system if you prompt it to.

EDIT

Like DVD/BluRay stations

IMO, I think it's time for some test on your HDDs one at a time to find out which of the 2 drive is actually causing this loud noise.

So i tried this and i don't think it really did anything. It did disable the drive after restart but all the noise was still there.

Can test them out one at a time by physically disconnecting one of them and then let it idle. After it's idle, start browsing the contents on the drive to see which one causes the louder noise. The other method is to spread the HDD apart from another, that's 1 HDD on top and the other on the bottom.

It might also be the design of the case, where the HDD's motor is amplified by the cases side panel. Now that's not confirmed cause if that was, there will be lots of complains about it.

They are that way already. As you can see on this horribly low quality picture here.
