So about five weeks ago I finally (after 14 years of waiting and searching) bought a complete (I mean complete, with all of the flaps, locks, and rear cable management intact) Alienware Aurora case from 2003. This is it as I bought it.

It was smothered all over in rubs, scratches, gouges and stains. This is the rear cable management cage that is always missing.

So I felt safe in adding it to my collection. However, it was work. Hard freakin' work. It took me three days of 10 hour shifts to colour sand, cut, buff and polish the panels.

I also had about six welds to make (plastic weld) to remove cracks and so on. This is a very old case now, so needed a lot of TLC. Then it was time to think about what I actually wanted inside of it. Threadripper? Skylake X? naah.

Turned out to be a Athlon XP 2400+ with 512mb DDR4 400. Time for a GPU. Note, because of what I planned to do too much would literally be too much and break every single game I had in mind.

OK so I paused the buying right now because I wanted to think about what I was going to do inside the rig. Usually when people build these oldskool PCs they do so just with the old stock parts. The problem is that since 2001 things have changed RE - noise. Old components are noisy and would drive me crackers. So, I had a dig through my junk parts box (that is where most of this came from, I needed to use it up) and found a very, VERY old water block.

There were no Orings in those days, you just wrapped plumber's tape around the fittings and did them up. Horrible. First check, does it fit?

I sent it off to my friend who has a mill, along with a slab of 10mm black acrylic. Then I set to work cleaning it with my dremel, then sand, then polish.

Notes for things to come. Everything is UV reactive. The pink res, the tubes, the coolant. I have a meter long custom strip of these coming.

It is one of the very few large HEDT cases Alienware made that I did not have. I remember being broke and living in the USA at the time it launched and I specced one up with a Celeron in it. $800 with no keyboard or mouse. So instead I decided to build/mod my own project and that was when I made Radiomactive. A G3 mac case painted luminous yellow and pink with PC guts. Celeron D, 256mb ram etc. Cost me about $230 in parts.

 

The case cost me £40 delivered. Guy drove about 30 miles thank god. I had all of the stuff I needed to colour sand cut and polish ETC so it was pure elbow grease from there on :)

 

Now to find a pre 2003. That is going to be hard.
