The LG V30 is now a thing

Hot off IFA, LG announced the LG V30, the successor to the V20 and the beefier sibling to the LG G6.

Specs-wise, the V30 is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 SoC, featuring 8 Kryo 280 cores clocked at 2.45GHz for a cluster of 4 and 1.9GHz for a second cluster of 4, paired with an Adreno 540 GPU clocked at 710MHz. RAM sits at 4GB of LPDDR4 (bumped to 6GB in some regions) and 64GB of UFS storage (128GB in some regions) with a microSD slot for secondary storage.

The display is a 6" 18:9 P-OLED display, the first time since the G Flex 2 where an LG phone uses an OLED display of any kind.

As with any V-series phone, the V30 features an array of videography features, like recording in LOG mode and having feature to pan towards a subject amongst other things. The main camera hardware is a 16MP camera (presumably the 1/2.8" IMX298 carried over from the V20) featuring a f/1.6 aperture and OIS, with the wide-angle 13MP camera now having an f/1.9 aperture. The front camera is a 5MP unit with f/2.2 aperture.

And yes, it has a 32-bit ESS Sabre DAC, like the V20. Battery sits at 3300mAh with QC 3.0 for quick top offs.

I actually really like it, but what do you guys think?

18:9 is a strange aspect ratio but in all fairness at least the buttons occupy some space.

I dont get why people hate this aspect ration so much. 99% of phone usage is vertical and you are scrolling...Thats where the AR helps the most. And its not like they tried to purposely get rid of 16:9, they just filled in space where the bezels were. I love my S8+ and its ratio.

Well actually, couldn't you call 18:9 2:1 since that's what it is?

Yeah, we can.

I keep alternating between the 2. I sometimes wish OEMs can just settle on one term.

Yeah, most of the time you're just scrolling through webpages or whatever which makes a taller screen really useful since you can display more info...

And since this is an oled display when you're watching a video or something the black on the side shouldn't be more distracting than a normal normal bezel screen.

I think this might be my next phone. It definitely checks a lot of the boxes I'm looking for.

The only thing I need to wait for are the reviews. LG is notoriously horrible with their battery optimization, and if it's poor just like every other phone they've put out, I'll be skipping this one too.

@D13H4RD2L1V3 You should note that the QUADDac is region specific again...so it won't reach everyone.

I agree, I think it's excellent, especially since we can now get 6" screens in bodies smaller than what a 5.7" screen would be in only a couple of years ago.

LG hasn’t abandoned its musical ambitions either, the LG V30 comes with a QuadDAC. Did we mention that there’s a 3.5mmm headphone jack on top? Note that once again the QuadDAC is subject to regional availability, as are the in-box B&O headphones.

I hope the V30 won't boot loop because the LG G3 that I used was doing that after a year of use and yes, battery optimization is terrible and I have to replace the battery.

My old G3 is using a Snapdragon 801 paired with a 1440p IPS display which is disappointingly dim and color gamut is a little bit dull The Snapdragon 801 was struggling to power the 1440p display so it gets hot a lot of the times. No wonder Samsung kept the display at 1080p when they launched the Galaxy S5 which also used the Snapdragon 801.

I don't know why LG fails so hard when it comes to battery life. I can only assume it's because of their skin.

Haha, yeah but being first to market can definitely have its benefits. I'm sure they sold quite a few units just on the spec bump alone.

Phone is more or less an S8+ and is what the G6 would have been if Samsung didn't get early exclusivity with the Snapdragon 835.

I only see any success if it can undercut the S8+ price point.

I strongly dislike the LG regional differences, however you could always have a look at the G6 Plus which is available in Europe (and everywhere else) with a quad dac and 128gb storage. The model name is G6+ H870DSU. (the U is important as there is a H870DS which is a regular G6)

I bought one a couple of months ago and coupled with a decent headset it's awesome.
