Thinking of getting into cryptocurrency mining.

I've been employed for about two weeks now part time, minimum wage and I hate it. Luckily I'm free to save most of my earnings since I'm only supplementary income. I'd like to get out of this miserable job as soon as possible, I'm considering literally everything. My middle brother has begun Crypto-currency mining Monero with his R9 390 and I'm considering investing my earnings to get into mining as well if it means I can earn enough to quit this cancerous job. I'm going to get my toes wet soon by using my RX 460 for it. I'm going to have to ask our electricity bill rate, but I'm pretty sure it's better since we moved from our rural home into an apartment.

 

If not this can you think of any other ways to invest my earnings? I've even been considering Military service, atleast there I won't be forced to put on this fake-ass cheesy smile for customers or worry about living expenses.

The value of currencies has recently declined, it's probably not worth it to start mining now.

You'd need about 30 rx 460s to earn what you'll earn in a minimum wage job per month. Before electric. Which is a fairly large investment of nearly $4,000 in and of itself. That's not even including that racks, the pci-brackets, the power supplies...

 

If you can't even deal with customers, good luck in the military. Their goal is solely to press your buttons.

Two pieces of advice;

1) Crypto-currency is quite volatile, so be prepared to spend money your most likely wont earn back. Cost of parts, Cost of Electricity over time, against the current/future worth of whichever currency you chose and possible fail/epic fail of said currency. If you hit it big well great, but if it flops welp nothing gained if not attempted but risk vs reward is not as clear as it may appear.

 

2) Military life is not a choice for everyone (I speak from experience - 12 years served myself in the Army) it is a life changing decision that will require more from you that you can, will need to accept  or cannot accept. A life in the military can be very rewarding or massively detrimental. Always be prepared to deploy to the field and make sure you understand what that can mean and entail. You may never deploy and have a somewhat at ease enlistment. 

Honestly I am not trying to scare you away from this decision just being real. 

 

My advice look into a new job, try something you feel more rewarding with. If you feel that is not an option, look into the military the rewards in character building, school funding (I did not use this)  and other self development you will receive (I mean growing up pretty much) the military has a way of doing this well.

 

Before taking either step think about the decision first do the research (military) and then make your choice and I mean it, it has to be your choice or you will not be happy with road taken.

How does this idea sound?:

I get a really good single GPU for my system and whenever I'm at work or sleeping, or just not gaming I set it to mine which can help me diversify and make a few dollars on the side without investing for a more low-risk low/modest return strategy.

 

IDK what job I should seek. I've grown up just doing what I'm told and behaving, speak when spoken too and I recieve what I need or want within reason. I've learned to not be materialistic, rather minimalistic and be happy for what I have. I have trouble with my social anxiety though. I figured the military would be a good option to have on the table because I could compensate for my social awkwardness with physical training.

That seems to reflect what other online friends told me on TS3 the other day where I was told some friends of my friends has a good relaxing time while others had a bad experience. I can't see myself dropping this job for another service industry job due to less convenient comute times, but IDK what else there is.

It really boils down to the job you sign up for. How you handle it and how you accept the life style really.

Some people do sign up for the wrong job and it turns into a sucky experience, thing is most of them don't know that they have the option to switch their job (or MOS in the US) if they find they are not cut out for the one they signed up for.

I have to admit it is hard to pick the right job at first as there are a lot of different one to chose from. So when I say take your time and do the research, you really do so you have at least an idea of what you want to do. I was an Engineer (lol my Avatar gives that away) and I loved it. My unit was great, well mostly there will always be "those" in every unit that aren't worth their salt.

There are also some that just had a tough time of it and the experience just plain did not work out for them. Not much can be done about that and you feel bad for them.

If your gun ho about it and decide to make the best of it you can have an excellent experience and walk away in the end feeling good about your decision even if you deploy.

Deployments can be killers of careers, especially not just anyone can deploy and not be affected, rarely does that happen.

 

Just putting this out there but if you have any questions regarding the military I can ... guide you somewhat and answer some of your questions but all the same your experience will be yours and it probably wont be like mine. Each countries military is obviously different in its methods of training but it all relatively the same in the end. I will tell yout that when your in you have a family, not matter what. You will both love and hate the guys (and maybe some females) but you will create a dynamic you will never forget. I still remember most of the guys I trained with in Basic and the stories ... lol. But yeah if you have questions I will do what I can to answer.

 

I hope for the best for you in the days to come. Do not feel bad or shame if you decide not to join up, they say only about 1% of the US population is capable of the job and only 1%-2% of that number actually step-up to do it. Its an honor to serve and there is no dishonor in not serving.

Cool. What hardware did you use? If I were to get into it I would be learning everything from my middle brother mentioned in my first post and on this forum. If I decided to set my RX 460 to mine most of the day while I'm at work/sleep I'm wondering what kind of money it would bring in for me on the side. I know it's weaker performance than his R9 390, but my card is way more power efficient than his as well.

The biggest problem for me right now regarding the military option is that I recently ~ 3 months ago had surgery to fix a hernia I had gotten from lifting fire wood. Doc says it's healing well and it feels so, but the last time I tried sit-ups it still hurt so it's a long waiting game still. I'm able to do everything else I normally do for exercise without pain like walk, run, squat, jumping-jack, push-up and lift dumbbells . Assuming I do return to peak training ability what kind of roadblock does having a history with a surgery like that present for joining the military?

As long as the injury did not have a long lasting debilitating effect you should have no issues.

Just inform them of the injury during your physical so they have it in your record. 

I had wrist surgery on both L/R before joining and I did fine.

I just used a ragtag matchup of hardware I had laying around. Keep in mind I'm in ND and power ranges from 3 1/2 cents to 7 cents. Cheapest in the us.

My brother when asked about the volatility simply replied that if your currency isn't doing well you can just change to a different one.

 

I just have a hard time relaxing knowing that I couldn't sustain myself if I had to. Like IDK what expenses I could possibly cut.

Rent is the biggest problem, our current appartment would bleed me dry alone, but maybe there are even more affordable albeit cramped accomadations designed for single persons in my general area.

 

After that is food. I already have a minimalistic diet:

PB&J on multi-grain is a staple I eat once a day,

Fruit juices and smoothies,

Cottage Cheese or Yogurt,

Refried beans,

Salad

Pickles

And some other things.

 

Electronics I can't give up are a toaster oven, microwave, sink, toilet shower, fridge smartphone, PC, window fan and an LED lamp. I'm assuming washer and dryer are shared among tenants as we have it currently. Maybe I could find a hand washing solution to cut some of that cost.

 

Like IDK I feel like I'm just rambling and brainstormin so thanks for bearing with me.
