Recover Damaged Files External HD

Hello, I have an old External WD My Book HD. I can't acess some of my files, most of the folders used to look like these

but now most of them look like these

Some I receive an error message of being inaccessible, some of them look empty.

I know that I probably won't be able to recover everything, but I would like to know if there is something I can do

WD external drives are notorious for having the mini/micro USB ports go bad on them. Might be worth taking apart the enclosure and directly plugging the drive into a desktop and see if you can get all your files that way.

Try to boot in Linux and see if you can recover the files from there. Linux is more powerful than windows. But heh... not sure for this one..
