New Leaks Show The iPhone 8 Will Support 4K 60fps Video on Front And Rear Cameras

New code found in the Homepod software leak appears to show that the iPhone 8 will support 4K 60fps video in both the front and rear cameras. This would make the iPhone 8 the first phone to support 4K 60fps video, unless the Note 8 beats it to it. However, I highly doubt the Note 8 will have a front facing camera capable of 4K 60fps video.

Following earlier details such as design and face recognition information, Portuguese news site iHelp has found code that seemingly indicates the iPhone 8 will be capable of 4K video at 60 frames per second with both the front and rear cameras…

The code, seen in the screenshot below, shows a device with support for 4K video at 60 FPS. Interestingly, there’s also a “front” and “back” identifier applied to each line, seemingly suggesting that both cameras will support the higher quality video.

Currently, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus support 4K video with the rear camera only, but only at 30 FPS. Meanwhile, the front camera is limited to 1080p.

According to the HomePod firmware, 4K video from the rear and front cameras will also support Apple’s new HEVC file type, which greatly reduces file size. As we reported earlier this year, HEVC can cut file sizes in half – arguably a necessity with the large file size of 4K content.

Really? I hope you are joking as facetime and other services use crazy compression and lower resolutions. I don't see any other phone company with 4K 60FPS so I say good on Apple. Now we wait and all other companies will have it to

I'd pick the 7s/7s+ as long as Apple keeps the Touch ID sensor, I don't want the face unlock in the rumored iPhone 8 which was rumored to ditch Touch ID. 2160p/60fps video recording is fine but they might as well bump up the base storage from 32 to 64 GB just to fit all those 4K videos.

Is there a hardware limitation on front facing cameras which have the resolution for 4K but cannot record it?

Can the ISP not simply switch between the two , letting both use the full features available?

It would make sense to have the ISP only serve one camera at a time as that is all you will use.

See, I understand making the rear camera support 2160p60, but I'm really not gonna understand the same for the front camera. Great, you get to record your face at a high frame rate and resolution. Not all that practical when it comes down to it.

I was wondering when a phone will come with this. Expected like Samsung or maybe even Sony with it first. I remember it was rumored for earlier Galaxies but maybe even new Note who knows. 

But neat though. 4k recording along 60fps for better motion experience is great.

On a phone it is. Compare a video taken with a proper 4k cam and one taken with a phone... The sensor in the phone is too tiny and the quality wont be better than a 1080p just because you increase the resolution. Not to mention the hit on the battery and the limited recording time(thermal issues).

Probably a whopping 15 minutes of battery life when recording though /s

 

Pretty nice to see Apple pushing forward phone camera capabilities like that, hopefully others will follow suit.

No one said it will be as good or better than a proper camera. And I seriously doubt that the 3x more pixels do absolutely nothing for quality. 

 

As as for the rest, sure it’s not perfect and will have problems, but I was more challenging your claim that in this case 4K 60hz is “100% a gimmick”, meaning that it is always completely useless for anything not marketing related.

As as for the rest, sure it’s not perfect and will have problems, but I was more challenging your claim that in this case 4K 60hz is “100% a gimmick”, meaning that it is always completely useless for anything not marketing related.

Higher pixel count =/= higher quality. You will get a similar/worse quality as FHD... Resolution, bit rate, frame rate. If you increase one of these then the other two will decrease. It can be a CPU limitation or the limit of the sensor itself. I would pick a high bitrate 1080p over a medium-low bitrate 4k.

Assuming a 4K camera is actually worth using on a phone, does this mean apple will finally put an sd card slot in  it so you can actually use it for something without running out space on your phone?.

SD card vs NVMe SSD for internal storage. Apple has always been about the user experience, SD cards complicate that, since not all can record 4k 60FPS. I've gone through 3 SD cards for my camera just to find one that can keep up on write speeds. Apple isn't going to want to complicate things for their users, Hence why they implemented NMVe storage on the iPhone 7.
