21:9 closest to Acer X34

Go to solution Solved by Damascus,

You won't get bars, just lower ppi.  Just get the x34 m8

The cost of the hardware to run the X34 is a bit more than I'd like to pay overall so I'm looking to upgrade from my current 29" LG Ultrawide with one closest matching the X34 with the following:

  • 34" 2560 x 1080 resolution
  • IPS Screen
  • 100hz minimum refresh rate
  • Gsync (if necessary)

This monitor would be paired with a 1070. Let me know if you need any more info. Let me know your suggestions. $800 budget.

I would just get the x34 and play at 1080×2560.  1080 ti levels of performance will be available for 1070 prices on the Volta launch.

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

The Predator X34 won't look right if you lower the resolution to 1080p ultrawide (source: I own one). I wouldn't blow that much money on the monitor and then NOT use half the resolution.

LTT just put out a floatplane video on this: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824025121&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=11552995&PID=1796839&SID=262247179

It's closer to your budget, but still pretty high. Unsure if you're going to hit your 100hz target at $800...

That would leave me with black bars all around the screen though and ruin the immersiveness. I'm not convinced Volta is going to run TI performance levels off the bat, not enough for Nvidia to seriously reduce the price of their card but I could be wrong. Everything is skewed right now because of the miners.

That's a tough call. At that price point the X34 is only $30 more on Amazon right now but I'd have to at least jump to a 1080 which is another $200 to even begin to touch the 1440P resolution. I've seen one without Gsync for that monitor for $500-$600 but didn't know if there were better options (the one I'm referring to has brightness issues).

Dude Volta is Nvidias next gen, the 2070 will probably be a 1080 ti level performer.

Also no, there will be no black bars.  Playing fullscreen on 1080p UW res will work without issues.

This guy claimed issues with that setup:

Not sure why that's the case, he says the 1080P scales as it should on a 1440P screen. I think the hype is too much on Volta, I believe it'll be around the TI's performance level if only a little bit better at around the same price or around $500 but I'd like to be proven wrong. Regardless, I need to go with Team Green because I have certain applications that require Nvidia better driver support when it comes to OpenGL so if it reduces the price of current gen cards I'm all for it.

You could skip G-Sync and go this route (once it's back in stock): https://www.amazon.com/Designo-MX34VQ-Frameless-Monitor-Adaptive-Sync/dp/B01N4UQIGT/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1501803593&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=34"+ultrawide+1080p+100hz

Still has the resolution that's too high, but you could run games at a lower res for now and at least have the desktop that looks sharp. Believe me, 34" ultrawide at 1080p is blurry as hell.

Yea I've heard that because the PPI is so low. How's the scaling for games from 3440x1440p to 2560x1080? Is there any noticeable difference? Black bars and the like?

No black bars (assuming it supports 21:9 in the first place). It'll just stretch the image. And yeah, you don't really want to go below 90 PPI. 1080p ultrawide at 34" is like 81 (1440p is 109).

Also, Nvidia has (without fail) made the ×70 cards perform as well as the ×80 ti of the last gen since the 970 beat the 780 ti.
