Hi,

I'm planning to buy the Sennheiser GAME ZERO headset, which has an impedance of 50 ohms. Do I need an amp to use them? My motherboard is the Gigabyte Z170 Gaming 7. I have an ASUS Xonar DX soundcard but I'm not currently using it, would I need it?

Thanks in advance.

If you mean GA-Z170X-Gaming-7 then the motherboard should have a quite decent sound solution, capable of driving headphones.

You may even have a switch, to change from 2.5x gain to 6x gain in case you use high impedance headphones (much more than 50 ohms, 50 ohm is not a big deal)

The quality of the sound from your onboard card is probably better than what the Sonar DX offers. It can depend on lots of things.

So short version, no worries, you can use headphones with onboard sound just fine.
