First time PC builder looking for final advice before i purchase parts.

Hello,

I am finally getting ready to purchase the parts and then build my first PC. I have spent a lot of time researching and waiting for the parts i knew i wanted to come out, now that everything is out and has been out for a few months to work out issues, i think it is finally time to pull the trigger. Before i do though i was hoping that i could get some final thoughts or concerns, if there are any.

This PC is going to be used for gaming, streaming, and college work i.e. writing papers and doing things with excel. I knew when i started i wanted my PC to run 4k, so i had to wait for 1080ti to come out and wait for aftermarket cooling. I know it is quite a bit of money to drop on a PC but i have been saving up for awhile and this is also a very late high school graduation gift from my parents and early gift to myself for getting my A.S. in a few months.

Everything is being purchased on Amazon and as of today comes in just below $3k. One question i do have is should i purchase the 3-4 year warranties Amazon is offering on the individual products or is it just a waste of money.

Again since I have never built one before i am hoping to get a kind of final approval of the build or any warnings/suggestions on things i missed. Once again thank you for your time. I appreciate it.

I would recommend keeping track of your warranties with the products themselves. I also would focus on optimization if you wanted to cut costs, I could see you saving about $500 off the bat. But that is because I am used to being on a tight budget.

Congrats! My brudah just graduated too so it is an exciting time.

  • Why the 1800x over the 1700?
  • I'd get an X370 motherboard.
  • Do you really need a DVD drive?
  • Consider the G.Skill KM780 instead of the Corsair. Cheaper, better quality.
  • You can get away with a much lower watt PSU.
  • Are you just using you HDD for mass storage? I'd consider dropping down to a 5400 RPM drive and getting a 1TB SSD instead of the setup you have there.

which subject?

If you mean which of those 3 subjects i will be using most with the PC then college work and gaming together followed by streaming. Gaming wise i play MMO's however i am wanting to jump to PC gaming for things like Fallout, Witcher, and more modern games; i.e. move away from consoles. However if i misinterpreted your question and you are asking which subject as far as college goes it would be business administration. So that's why not only paper's, i.e. some gen ed stuff but excel for accounting, etc.

Aight. I see many places where you could save here.

- Don't get the 1800X. It's just a factory overclocked 1700. Getting a 1700 will save you quite a bit.

- I wouldn't recommend using watercooling as a first time builder. Whether you're planning to overclock or not, a Be Quiet! or Noctua cooler should be fine for both performance and silence.

- That 850W PSU is a little overkill; a 750W would give you lots of headroom for overclocks.

The 1800x was because from what i read is it can reach higher OC and the chance for a higher OC is greater than the 1700.

nope, like @LeinadTM said the 1800x is just a factory OC'd 1700, very little to no binning happening

I will look at my PSU choice definitely; however my concern with going no water cooling and strictly air cooling is that is that it will not keep my CPU cool enough. My room was  a garage that is now walled off, while i do get air conditioning in my room as well as have a wall cooler i can turn on at my leisure, where i live it gets like 100-115 in the summer; and that heat loves to just sit in my room. So my room is generally always hot to begin with. So i figured water cooling will keep my CPU cooler and run at a lower temp.

There won't be too much of a difference between a good air cooler and a H100i. However, if you're really set on watercooling, just be careful and go for it.

I have had multiple people say just go with 1700 over 1800x. My two questions are will 1. The 1700 be able to handle what i need, i know at 4k the bottleneck is the GPU, but i want to make sure the streaming won't bottleneck due to CPU. 2. Is there any major difference besides clock speed between the 1700 and 1700x. Thanks again for your help.

1. Yes, easily.

2. No.

not sure if this will help but i found this 4tb hard drive with 7200 rpm and from what i search its has only slower 4k read speeds https://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-Desktop-7200rpm-Internal-Drive/dp/B013JPKUU2/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&qid=1501316677&sr=8-18-spons&keywords=4tb%2Bhd&th=1

OK thanks, should be the last question i have regarding CPU. On Amazon the 1700 comes with a wraith cooler, if i decide to forgo the water cooler will this keep my CPU cool enough, with OC'ing and will i have to buy an extra bracket mount like i would have to for the h100i v2 since that doesn't come equipped for am4 socket; or would you recommend a different air cooler, and if so which one preferably a quiet one. Thanks again for all of your help.

I believe the H100i v2 now ships with an AM4 bracket, but in case it doesn't, the Wraith cooler is surprisingly good. It can handle slight overclocks, but any decent ones would need a better cooler. I'd go for a Be Quiet! Dark Rock or something.
