Windows legacy or uefi.

When i installed windows i simply plugged in the usb and restarted. I didnt configure uefi or legacy in boot options in the bios. Does windows install as uefi or legacy by default?

It'll install whatever your BIOS settings dictate.

Any idea what that is for the newer gigabyte ryzen bios.

If you haven't changed anything, it should be defaulted to UEFI. All modern systems starting from Windows 8 should be UEFI.

Windows will install on whatever you set. However, assuming you seek the best experience:

  • Windows 8 and newer, you want your UEFI set to UEFI mode for the OS.
  • Windows Vista and older, you want to set your UEFI to Legacy.

Note: Windows 7, while has boot capabilities for UEFI, it doesn't actually support UEFI beyond that.

 

If you have none legacy hardware in your system, you also want CSM (Compatibility Support Module) disabled in your UEFI, and you want Fast Boot enabled (which you can enable at any time)
