What's behind Google's poor app development on Windows?

Hi,

 

I used to use Google products a lot, but I'm getting surprised by the poor quality of their Windows apps. The YouTube user experience on a Windows tablet is really atrocious compared to the one on Android, and the Google Drive client is really bad and unreliable.

There's a huge gap between YouTube and Netflix on Windows in terms of user experience, performance and overall quality and I'm curious to know why Google doesn't seem to care about its Windows users. It's not like we're all going to buy Chromebooks. On the other hand, Google seems to have the worst devs ever since most of their apps really sucked at first and got improved over the years.

So do you think it's a marketing strategy or just a flaw in their development process?

Fun fact they don't allow their employees to use Windows PCs on their network or for work without prior approval.

I always wonder this also. There are alternate YouTube apps on the windows store, but they aren't that great. I ended up getting a free surface pro 2 from my work and I hated the fact of not being able to have a YouTube app. I ended up installing Android x86 on it, but as of now Graphics compatibility is weak with android x86 so 1080p 60fps videos are choppy.

Real talk, everything Google has been making and doing has been on the decline, and the only thing they every did all that well was in browser services. Everything else comes down to either being largely based in open source, or garbage. That shows more on an operating system that they don't know the ins and outs of.

Seems like a terrible idea considering a large percentage of their user-base will be on Windows. I doubt it's true. Even Apple probably has some Windows PCs picking around still.

Also why are the iOS versions superior to the Android versions? Reminds me of how Microsoft makes better apps for iOS than for their Windows 10 Mobile platform.

They have Windows labs for development obviously but they don't let just anyone use Windows without permission. They are concerned about the weaker security of Windows, hence why they give you a Macbook or any laptop with their own Linux distro on it when you get hired since mac OS and Linux are inherently more secure.
