The IMPORTANCE of a UPS

Can everyone who has ever lost a PC to power failure please put your story here and explain why or why not you now have or do not have a UPS. I need to explain to a friend how important they are but he does not understand the possibility of a power failure and the damage it will cause. Thank you everyone and I hope your PC is better protected now

Most of the time it's not power failure that causes damage, it's the possible surge when power comes back on that does damage.

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

 

 

I bought one last Black Friday on Amazon for pretty cheap. Cant say its helped at all but it sure as hell makes me feel better.

It's main purpose would be for data protection and mission critical work where you can't stop or lose power, but also to protect the hardware from bad power to a certain degree. If there are a lot of fluctuation in power in the area a good quality UPS's will have AVR's built in to compensate for variations and completely disconnect onto backup power if power quality drops a significant amount.

"cheap" how much did you spend? what is your PC specs and power draw? you can't buy a decent UPS for "cheap".

it must be able to handle the load of ur pc at any moment(includes monitors) and tell it to turn off so its able to shut off correctly

In most cases to prevent data loss from sudden power loss and hardware from the sudden change in power causing a surge as mentioned.

yup, UPS costs a lot of money, unless you are doing something that's very important, it's unnecessary.

It's not absolutely mandatory but a good option, at the very least a good quality surge protector should always be used for any valuable electronic. This is one of the go to units I usually recommend, others such as Belkin, GE, Tripplelite and such are all good options.

Surge protector yes UPS not so much. I'm never going to put myself in a situation were I am writing critical files in bad weather. Yes it could go out another time but I don't write that many important things. Surge protectors are great but again they won't stop lightning

Yeah but you would need a huge UPS as you are rendering something and you can't really just pause a render then come back after a restart

Never had my system set up in hardware RAID and have thus never bothered with a UPS.

A UPS isn't going to help a machine that's rendering because the UPS won't keep machine like that going for more than 5mins or so.  Either way your render job has to stop.
