You won't experience screen tearing at all

At higher fps you shouldn't notice the screen tearing. Will it screen tear? Yes. Will you be able to notice it with the frame only being on the screen for a split second? Probably not. Screen tearing is much more noticeable on a 60hz monitor but some say they can see it on a 144hz monitor so I guess it really depends on the person but for me I can't tell.

Good point. Also set V-Sync to fast, as it helps with screen tearing.

I have two systems with a gtx 980, one with a 4k display and one with a 144hz 1080p display. I *almost never* notice screen tearing. There are a few select games that I notice it on my 4k display, but I think with your gtx 1080 you'll be fine. At 144hz you are unlikely to notice any tearing anyway unless you have some other component giving you performance hiccups.

It does? I thought it let your GPU go as fast as it wanted, just synced the frames with the refresh rate. I do get 80fps in my game (yes, I only have one), and I'm on a 60hz monitor.

It only kicks in when fps is higher than refreshrate. It doesn't help if your fps is lower than refreshrate. It's amazing if you have higher fps than refreshrate and you don't want to lock your frames like with traditional vsync. I use it for overwatch to ensure I get the most up to date frame and it helps alot but it doesn't help if fps is lower than refreshrate.

If fast sync worked when fps was lower than refreshrate then gsync would be obsolete

Technically speaking, yes. (Also I assume you know this, but your FreeSync display doesn't work in terms of it's adaptive refresh rate feature with an Nvidia GPU)

 

At 144hz though, screen tearing refreshes so fast you normally dont see it (as much) but this is assuming your game is at a high fps as well. At 70fps on a 144hz monitor you will still see it. At 144fps on a 144hz monitor you probably wont know it's there.

Ah. On another note, why is G-Sync so expensive? Just because it's "special", or is it actually harder to implement?

I thought Fast Sync was removed as an option for Nvidia cards. Maybe I'm thinking of something else. I know it was to help with tearing.

It's my understanding that it requires a module built into the monitor and the manufacturer has to pay Nvidia. FreeSync is open source software that can cheaply be integrated into the monitor. The GPU does the work instead of a module in the monitor.

Fast sync is a recent option with nvidia cards so I'm not sure what you are referring to.

Oh, it was Adaptive V-Sync.  They removed it on a lot of notebooks.
