IS $30 worth going from a 1700 to 1700x?

The 1700x is on sale, to where the difference between it and the 1700 is $30.

Is the 9% difference in price worth the performance difference?

if  you can get the wraith max cooler with it , sure . Otherwise don't bother.

do you have mounting hardware or it ? Tbh , both cpus should be able to reach similar speeds once overclocked . By getting the 1700x , you might get 100mhz more if your lucky . Resell value might be higher if you ever decide to sell it . There's no real advantage to it.

XFR is nice. 3.9GHz boost on 1 physical core (2 logical cores) can be appealing for single threaded usage.

Noctua sends out free mounts with proof of purchase. So not an issue.

So only really a minor better OC and possible better resell?

It's AMD's boosting tech . If power and thermal allow , you can get 100mhz extra out of the 1700x and 1800x at stock vs their standard boost speeds ( 3.8 and 4ghz respectively ).

If you have a cpu cooler and want a higher binned cpu then get the 1700X.

The 1700 should be able to over clock to same speeds as the 1700x

XFR is eXtended Frequency Range and only applies to the X series CPUs from AMD. It boosts the single core speed by 100MHz when the CPU detects robust cooling presence.

it is not offered on the non-X series CPUs and is disabled when overclocked.

I have killed one 1700x already trying to get that XFR frequency on all cores and i will not try again.

How much voltage did you use? I'm curious.

RAM: 32GB G.Skill Trident Z CL16 3200 MHz

Mobo: Asus Tuf X570 Plus Wifi

CPU Cooler: NZXT Kraken X53

PSU: EVGA G6 Supernova 850

Case: NZXT S340 Elite

Current Laptop:

Model: Asus ROG Zephyrus G14

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900HS

GPU: RTX 3060

RAM: 16GB @3200 MHz

Old PC:

If you plan on overclocking, of course it is. The 1700(X) is hand picked to be able to run at higher clocks and similar or the same voltages as the R7 1700, so it will have more overclocking headroom and produce less heat doing so, so if you take that into consideration, and you plan on overclocking, it's a great option.

Potentially R7 1800x performance for 100$ cheaper.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 @3.7ghz (1.3v) Cooler: NZXT Kraken X62 GPU: Zotac Mini GTX 1060 Case: NZXT - S340 (Black/Blue) Mobo: MSI B350m mortar arctic

RAM: Team Vulcan DDR4 (2x4gb, 2666mhz) Storage: Toshiba 1tb 7200rpm HDD, PNY CS1311 Sata SSD (6gb/s) PSU: EVGA - BQ 500w 80+ Bronze semi modular

Theres a much higher chance of getting a chip that can do 4ghz with the X series, that is all, but it's only 30$, and if you plan on getting that high of an OC, you'll get a third party cooler, like an AIO liquid, or good air cooler, so you're looking at a "negligible" 30$.

I'd do it :)

I already own a good air cooler in hopes of getting the best OC I can get. I'd LOVE 4GHz

Assuming a 200 MHz higher max OC as a worse case scenario, that's roughly a 5% difference in performance.   There's no guarantees with the silicon lottery though.

5% more performance for 10% more money.

Just to keep you not being over hyped, there is a chance that even 1700x cant OC pass 4ghz. But ofcourse statistically 1700x has higher chance to overclock higher than 1700.

Its actually more like 13% now. I found both cheaper on Amazon right now. For some reason the 1700 price on amazon isn't being picked up by PC Part Picker.
