Razer reportedly plans to build a phone for gamers, but needs more money

"Razer is interested in building a smartphone for gamers, according to a report from Bloomberg. The company is planning an IPO in Hong Kong later this year that could value its business at $5 billion. It will reportedly use some of the funds to build its smartphone."

 

"The news isn’t that surprising, given that Razer acquired the smartphone company Nextbit earlier this year. Razer said Nextbit would operate as an independent company at the time of the acquisition, but hasn’t said much publicly about it since."

 

so Razer is planning on building a phone, they will need to bring a lot more than RGB if they want to to be successful. 

 

 if they do are you interested, would you buy it? why or why not? would a phone made for "gamers" be worth it?

Yes. They would need A LOT of RGB to be successful.

If it turns out to be reasonably priced and has decent specs (I would assume high end) - including a decent battery), I might consider it.

A smartphone for gamers. It may be overly cynical, but that sounds like toilet paper for crane operators, or spoons for gymnasts. Maybe even socks for ventriloquists or a toothbrush for extraterrestrials.

 

Actually, the latter would be a genuine departure from baseline designs to accommodate a completely new market segment. This phone, however, maybe not so much.

That is also true. I mean, I won't say someone isn't able to come up with a design. But invariably, unless it's a pocket-sized streaming kejigger ala NV Shield (which isn't exactly a massive commercial success) it may end up being too small, or too underpowered to do everything well at the same time. I'm racking my brain trying to come up with something Razer can do that established smartphone manufacturers can't or haven't, and I'm coming up short.  

 

If it ends up being just some kind of arbitrary implementation of some kind of Razer Peripheral pairing ecosystem I'm gonna be very, very upset *ominous finger wagging*.

Would have if it had the hardware to backup the proposition. I had one and loved it. Just the game availability was low. And the QC was low too, had the flex cable for the sliding screen crap out on me twice. 

 

 

As for razers phone id consider it if it's a 4.7" screen.

Id never buy it and i think the market is already too saturated but, i can imagine it being matte black aluminum, (why didnt the s8 come in this -_-) similar to the blade with some sharp edges. It could look really sleek imo.

Why do all this big companies think they have to spend a lot on smartphone development?

 

The market is already flodded and it is very hard to have an unique selling point. Also a "normal" high end smartphne is already good for gaming. At least for the 10 minutes you need to wait for the bus.

 

I don't see a (financial) success for this product.

Mineral oil and 40 kg aluminium heat sinks are a perfect combination: 73 cores and a Titan X, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Oil

Define a "phone for gamers"... if it just means grotesque design and rgb everywhere, no thanks. If it means stuffing in some overpowered, overheating hulk SoC to run candy crush at 200fps, also no thanks.

so they are going to make a phone where they push parts beyond spec and then lots of thermal throttling and ofc about zero QC, that is how they make laptops, so why expect anything else from a phone?
