Microsoft GLAS - Thermostat for your home. Running Windows 10

No pen support (I know you are just so disappointed, but it's not a Surface branded), GLAS is a new electric thermostat being unveiled by Microsoft which is powered by Cortana runs on Windows 10 IoT. The electric thermostat is actually build by Johnson Controls for Microsoft in partnership. Johnson Controls is a multinational company that specializes in produces automotive parts, including electric car batteries and various electronics for cars and HVAC equipment and thermostats for buildings.

 

 

This new  thermostat is similar to the NEST thermostat in itself, but features a glass OLED transparent display which is also touch controlled.

Looks pretty cool if you don't have a blank boring wall behind your thermostat, if you were to ask me. The perfect thermostat to reboot on you as you adjust the temperature while Windows install those updates.

Considering most of the features that Nest incorporates into their ecosystem, I wouldn't mind if Microsoft pulls something similar.

I just don't understand the thermostat hype at all... On or off is enough for me and a modulating one would be nice but that's it.

Cold? Put on something extra.

Warm? Take something off.

 

Much faster than poking your thermostat (or yelling at it) and wait until the temperature changes.

The fan doesn't have an "off" setting because it wouldn't make sense.  Auto means off unless the system is heating or cooling (because you kinda need a fan to blow hot or cold air around...).  On means on.

 

Nest is awesome.  Scheduling saves on power bills and I can change the temperature from my bed.

MS hasn't exactly penetrated a single market for the last few years, the problem is that they do a lot things good but nothing great.

Usually the only reason they are dominating in a market is because there's not a good enough alternative and you don't really have a choice...

This question is like asking why a carbeurated car with manual steering and no ABS sucks.  It works, but modern stuff has a vastly larger set of useful features.

 

It doesn't take more than a few months to recover the cost of installing a Nest and you get alot of convenience features thrown in for free.

I think I'll pass, I'd rather not allow Microsoft to spy on my home's climate in addition to my PC. All this "Smart" technology trying to replace perfectly good "Dumb" technology.

 

If anything I'd go with a Nest thermostat if I wanted a "Smart" thermostat. Google already probably knows more about me than I do, and there's not much changing that.

That's exactly the same fan settings as any other thermostat, smart or otherwise.  "Auto" kicks the fan on whenever the heat or AC cycle on.  "On" leaves the fan circulating air constantly, while the heat/AC cycle on and off depending on temperature (or in the case of more advanced units, humidity as well).

What kind of heating systems do you guys have? O_o

Mine doesn't have fans... Only a pump to let the water flow through the house so it gets to the rads and back.
