X5690 OC Bottleneck a GTX 1080?

So my water pump decided to leak the other day and took my i7 7700k, motherboard and ram with it :( luckily my gpu survived but I'M very budget limited now but I came across the Xeon X5690 the other day there very cheap and Is just a i7 990x I was wondering would the chip overlooked to 4.2-4.6ghz Bottleneck my GTX 1080? And 1440p at 75hz

next upgrade should be CPU based if you have an ssd already.

138 is a good number.

A minimal bottleneck but you won't see it that much

Calm down. Getting such an old chip won't do you good when you upgrade in the future. I'd say get a used Z170 board and G4560. Upgrade back to the 7700k later and use a huge air cooler instead.

The "B" word should only ever be used according to a point of reference. What's your target resolution/framerate? 1080p 60hz?144hz? 1440p 60hz? If you're playing in the 60 range mostly (and a bit above, depending on the game), you should be fine.

Yeah those tend to leverage a few threads at least, so the initial point still stands, it should be alright. I wouldn't vouch for it much past that, but you should mostly satisfy your 1440p/75hz criteria, if you really have to make this purchase now. If you're checking used market, I would look into Sandy+, but if you can't find a good deal on anything else, I'm not going to insist on anything, obviously.

I recently did some test g with a gtx 1080 in my X5680 system, and the results were very good.

Was the settings maxed out?  and that's made it more tempting now only hit 75% max on the cpu wow

Pretty much yeah. Very high, 1440p and 144hz.
