1/2: Ryzen 5 1600 becomes 2nd best selling CPU

Source 1: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-ryzen-amazon-cpu-1600,34926.html

Source 2:  https://www.amazon.com/Best-Sellers-Computers-Accessories-Computer-CPU-Processors/zgbs/pc/229189

  • AMD's Ryzen 5 1600 rocketed from the No. 5 spot on Amazon's bestselling CPU list to the second place position last weekend, unseating Intel's Core i5-7600K

    • Intel's Core i7-7700K still enjoys the leading spot.

    • R7 1700 is 4th.

  • Amazon updates its list of bestselling CPUs hourly, so the results change frequently.

  • The Amazon list is a poor indicator of overall market share as the majority of processors ship in OEM systems

  • Ryzen chips don’t have integrated graphics, which affects their market share as many OEM systems leverage integrated graphics

    • the company's forthcoming APU lineup, which includes integrated graphics, will help broaden its appeal.

Source 2:  http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-07-07/sa-to-get-worlds-biggest-lithium-ion-battery/8687268

  • ...And Elon Musk is promising to build it in 100 days, or it's free- we’re talkin’ $50 million dollars.

  • Tesla will build the 100-megawatt battery which will store energy from a nearby Wind Farm

  • Musk: "If South Australia is willing to take a big risk, then so are we," he said.

  • Looks: The battery would be "nicely arranged white obelisks".

  • WHY: South Australia has been battling power problems since a statewide blackout in September 2016:

"It will completely transform the way in which renewable energy is stored, and also stabilise the South Australian network as well as putting downward pressure on prices,"

  • Jawbone was last valued at $1.5 billion when it raised $165 million in January 2016

Hackers breaching US Nuclear Plants

Source 1: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/06/technology/nuclear-plant-hack-report.html

Source 2: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-40538061

  • Since May, hackers have been penetrating the computer networks of companies that operate nuclear power stations and manufacturing plants in the United States and abroad.

  • Hackers wrote highly targeted emails containing fake résumés for engineering jobs and sent them to the senior industrial control engineers who maintain access to critical industrial control systems.

  • Once the recipients clicked on the resumes, attackers could steal their credentials and proceed to other machines on a network.

  • Hackers breached at least a dozen US power plants in attacks in May and June

  • There is no indication that hackers were able to jump from their victims’ computers into the control systems of the facilities, nor is it clear how many facilities were breached.

  • A spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security said,

“There is no indication of a threat to public safety, as any potential impact appears to be limited to administrative and business networks.”

  • The origins of the hackers are not known. But the report indicated that an “advanced persistent threat” actor was responsible,

    • which is the language security specialists often use to describe hackers backed by governments.

    • The hackers’ techniques mimicked those of the organization known to cybersecurity specialists as “Energetic Bear,” the Russian hacking group that researchers have tied to attacks on the energy sector since at least 2012.

OneDrive has stopped working on non-NTFS drives

Source 1: posted by WMGroomAK https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/803622-microsoft-onedrive-now-only-works-with-ntfs-drives/

Source 2:  https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/07/onedrive-has-stopped-working-on-non-ntfs-drives/

  • With its latest update, Microsoft's OneDrive no longer works with anything other than disks formatted with the NTFS file system

  • File systems such as FAT32, exFAT, and ReFS will now provoke an error message when OneDrive starts up.

  • To continue to use the software, files will have to be stored on an NTFS volume. While FAT disks can be converted, ReFS volumes must be reformatted and wiped.

  • NTFS is the default file system in Windows, but

    • people using SD cards to extend the storage on small laptops and tablets will typically use exFAT.

    • People using Storage Spaces to manage large, redundant storage volumes will often use ReFS.

  • The company's position is that OneDrive should always have warned about these usage scenarios and that it's only a bug or an oversight that allowed non-NTFS volumes to work.

Windows 10 to combat ransomware by locking up your data

Source 1:  posted by hey_yo_ https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/801264-windows-10-build-16232-will-try-to-combat-ransomware-by-locking-up-your-data/

Source 2: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/06/windows-10-will-restrict-data-access-to-authorized-apps-to-combat-ransomware/

  • The latest Windows 10 build includes a trial of a new anti-ransomware capability

  • Ransomware has posed a new risk: it’s not that another user will change all your files but rather that a program operating under a given user's identity will modify all the data files accessible to that user identity.

  • Microsoft's attempt to combat this is called "Controlled folder access," and it's part of Windows Defender.

  • Certain directories can be designated as "protected," with certain locations, such as Documents, being compulsorily protected.

  • Protected folders can only be accessed by apps on a whitelist

Qualcomm trying to ban the sales of Iphones in the US

  • It also wants sales halted on iPhones that have already made their way in.

  • Qualcomm says that Apple is violating six patents that have to do with extending a phone’s battery life.

  • “Apple continues to use Qualcomm’s technology while refusing to pay for it.”

  • Apple claims that Qualcomm is charging “disproportionately high” fees for the use of its patents and abusing its position as the market leader in smartphone modems

Huge dome reads inhabitants’ body language

Source 1: https://techcrunch.com/2017/07/07/cmu-researchers-create-a-huge-dome-that-can-read-body-language/

Source 2:

  • The Panoptic Studio is a new body scanner created by researchers at Carnegie Mellon that will be used to understand body language in real situations

  • The dome contains 480 VGA cameras and 31 HD cameras as well as 10 Kinect sensors.

  • It can create wireframe models of participants inside the dome interacting, talking, and arguing.

  • Why? To show computers what we are thinking.

“We communicate almost as much with the movement of our bodies as we do with our voice,” said associate professor Yaser Sheikh. “But computers are more or less blind to it.”

  • The computer can look at the various hand and head positions and verbal communication, and begin to understand when two people are angry, happy, or argumentative.

    • “A single shot gives you 500 views of a person’s hand, plus it automatically annotates the hand position,”

About the smartwatch issues that you talk about, like charging and battery life - I think that you don't consider the gear s2 and s3 from Samsung. Their docks are literally what you explain you expect a dock to be - like you just drop the watch and it automatically positions itself correctly and starts charging. There is no need to align anything. As for the battery life - my s2 is always connected to my phone and I use it all day long and it lasts me for 4 days without power saving. s3 is supposed to have even better battery life, so...yeah, please be a bit more objective.

Thx for talking about the issue of overtraining! Although I had a heartattack already (which I recovered from pretty nicely) there were still supposedly professional trainers who tried to push me beyond my limits if you can believe that! And then you're also supposed to not eat any sugar or carbs while you're at it. Me being the sucker that I am work out about 5 days a week these days and ride about 100km per week with my bike - that was until I got an Ulnar nerve entrapment from the biking and now it's no sports at all for a while. People always push and push and think you just pull a sicky as soon as you're not 100% on top of your game until your brain klicks and you just run nuts and start to race the sun. That's todays society for you.

South Australia represent! The issue we have been having is that South Australia gets a lot of its power from an inter-connector running from Victoria (the state next door), we had a huge windstorm that knocked over a large portion of the power line, which caused a surge that tripped something to shut the inter-connector and wind farms off. Power was out for days in most places. Government did nothing at first.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2017-03-28/wind-farm-settings-to-blame-for-sa-blackout-aemo-says/8389920 - that's the report for the investigation

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_South_Australian_blackout - general info

ABC is the government news agency, they have to remain neutral, so it is quite reliable.

I got a Sony SWR30 for 40 USD on clearance. It tells time. After a 2 dollar addon app by a third party it has one of the best watchfaces I've ever seen. The phone finder only rings for about 10 seconds. The voice command addon app is severely limted. The command to trigger the voice command directly on the phone does work well enough("Hi, Galaxy" voice command unlocks the phone and waits for command, but the watch command needs you to unblock the phone). The SMS notification vibration is way too short. But if I happen to look at my watch, it has enough info for me to know if I need to pull out my phone.

I'd say the watch is worth about 20 USD. It'd go up if the Voice Command is fixed and the SMS notification vibration is adjustable to at least the same length as my ringtone.

The watch only updates about every 24 seconds. The "RNG" one is a watchface that only has milliseconds, and results in a "random" 3 digit number ever update. You know, in case you would ever want that. the XNK one is my personal watchface. Please ignore that the phone battery percent "1" in "100" overflows into the watch battery percent.
