RED Hydrogen - $1500 Android Smartphone

Professional camera manufacturer RED, beloved by Linus, have announecd a $1500 Android Smartphone. Key features include a 5.7" holographic display, which will allow for 2D, 3D, holographic .H4V, VR, AR and MR content - all without the need for glasses; the H3O algorithm which they claim will allow you to experience 5.1 like sound through your headphones, and modularity, alothough modules are not confirmed or priced. The phone will also be able to be used with RED's camera lineup as a monitor. It will come either in aluminium for $1195 or titanium for $1595, although this seems to be early bird pricing so it could be more. Expecting to ship by  Q1 2018, there is a guarantee that orders will not be filled on time - an interesting concept - due to 'display production limitations'. 

 

Specs are very lacking, particularly with no information about the camera. Worth the $1500 price tag?

This seems like a pointless product and it will more than likely fail. I am not interested in purchasing it even if it was cheaper than the S8+.

We know nothing about the specs. if it can be a decent amount faster then the competition the price is ok, keeping in mind how they price handles for their cameras.

 

I am interested to know more.

 

EDIT: it looks like the back is a heat sink and I like the industrial design.

Me too - hard to make a judgement without full specs, but it could be interesting. Build quality should be exceptional

keep in mind this is a first gen product, RED is not a smartphone maker.

what he means is that they have not made smartphones before which means they are inexperienced. which means they could do some basic mistakes that other brands know not to do.

 

EDIT: my dad has always wanted a smartphone that could take or add better lens to. he has SLR and DSLR cameras but now that phone and point and shoot cameras have gotten so much better he does not feel the need for a DSLR again.

I'm just thinking of Linus's RED Camera video, the 'modularity' that is mentioned and wondering how many peripherals that they may want to try to get you to purchase... so, you're looking at $1200.00 for the Aluminum (not guaranteed), plus probably at least $100 for each accessory that you have to get.  If it performs as advertised, it could be an interesting concept phone, but I'm doubting how practical it will be.

It's way too light on specs for me to drop $1600 on a blind pre-order.  It doesn't even list the screen resolution.

 

Support is also going to be another problem.  My iPhone I can replace or have serviced within an hour no matter where I am, this thing is going to be a month turnaround time by a much poorer company than Apple that'll probably nickel and dime for everything.

So just wondering what technology is being implemented to make this work because so far you need expensive gear to be able to make this work.
