VEGA die size confirmed

Prysin
Quote

AMD's Raja Koduri, leader of the company's Radeon Technologies Group, has somewhat informally confirmed on Twitter the overall die size of AMD's Vega chips. After PC Perspective updated their prognosis regarding Vega's die-size to a beefier 512 mm², Twitter users plied Raja Koduri with questions regarding this subject. Koduri declined to answer directly, actually opting for a somewhat cryptic response, in that " (...) the answer [to Vega's die-size] is the closest perfect square number actually:)".

For the math-savvy around here (or even just for those of you who have read the headline), that particular equation should solve towards a perfect 484 mm² die area

Interesting. I thought it would be closer to 530-550mm2, but hey, this means yields could be better, and thus, profits would rise.

For those unaware of Raja's Twitter handle. Its GFXChipTweeter

Ummmm is it just me or did the whole internet miscalculate?!?

Pcper put die size at 512 mm^2.... the closest perfect square is not 484, but 23^2=529 mm^2....

Well, my R9 Fury had die size of 596 mm2 so as a successor to the Fury series, it's good to see at least a smaller die. Although I'm not optimistic about Vega, it just won't deliver to what has gathered around it... People will be disappointed even if Vega turns out to at least match Nvidia's offerings at a lower price point.

Sadly you're spot on. Even if Vega matches the 1080Ti it won't be enough at this point. So many rumors about why the delay, from Apple insisting that it's not released before the new mac to design issues, etc.

I wish it was going to be better news.

Marketing with a purpose. Though they could have made the blower better as Nvidia did with Pascal.

perform, sure. Relative to what? a 1070 to 1080.

It was obvious it wouldnt go much further then that.

It should slot in between the 1080 and 1080 Ti. The Vega FE professional testing slots it in right at that level, for the most part.

See this post for a link to some interesting testing:

Most games and all of the synethics run faster in "Pro Mode" vs "Game Mode". Lends credence to the thought that the drivers aren't "gimped", but they are a stable branch from the Fury X line. The Vega "tuned" drives should launch with RX Vega, which means we actually get to see the new shader functions et al.

I'm still looking for Vega reviews where a it was benched on Ryzen.  Specifically if there is any performance difference between Ryzen and Kaby Lake.  I'm interested to see if the infinity fabric in Ryzen lends an advantage to the infinity fabric in Vega.

Oh wow if that's true I did not see that coming... I mean MSI was already scaring me with the "Vega needs a lot of power". I mean the die size does influence a lot the amount of power that the card draws, am I right?

It needs just a tiny bit more power than Titan XP. Not really a problem, especially since it runs cooler than a Titan XP.

Gamers Nexus tested Vega FE with a i7 5930K, X99 mobo, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD and AIO water cooler Asetek 570LC.

Total System Power consumption under load was 400 watts.

it's not a "problem" but it does make me question why the power consumption is so high when it doesn't perform as well as the Titan XP

There used to be an old issue where Nvidia drivers performed poorly on Ryzen systems, that issue has been fixed. As for Vega + Ryzen that is very unlikely to see any change at all.
