Why are GPUs so expensive right now??

So I've checked on Newegg and Amazon, 1070s are going for 1080 prices (and higher) and 1060s/580s are going for 1070 prices (AND HIGHER!). Is that right or am I just having some sort of brain fart?

 

I know that the radeon cards are expensive because of miners right now iirc, but is this affecting all GPUs? This is ridiculous.

wow its gotten extreme in the US  Here its inflated but not that bad. a 1080Ti is still around £650. But there you've got 1070s for $700+

It's affecting Nvidia cards too. Ethereum and ZCash mining.

Plus if you don't have any supply from AMD, their competitors videocards become in demand as well, causing these prices.

Alright, thanks for clearing that up. Damn, now is a terrible time to build PCs. Not only are RAM and SSD prices inflated because of the NAND shortage, now GPUs are inflated like crazy. Ugh.

Mining isn't going away any time soon either. Problem is for miners these are investments that will pay a return so these will sell at those prices.

I think our 1080/1080 Ti's are still close to an appropriate price. It's well-known that GDDR5X is worse for mining than GDDR5, so those cards aren't taking off as much. It's the previously $200–250 cards that are going crazy, and now apparently 1070's due to lack of supply of the cheaper cards.

Yep considering selling my 1070 for more than I bought it for and getting a 1080Ti. (paying the diff ofc). 1070 Strix OC edition goes for ~£500 used. I don't mine so I'd gladly buy a card better for gaming but sucky at mining.

I do sympathize with you though. These prices are just insane. No one should honestly build a gaming PC right now unless you planned on ≤ 1050ti or a 1080ti, which is a very large performance gap

Yikes, I see on Ebay that my Strix 1070 is selling for about the same price used that it cost new. But it's already more GPU than I need, and there really isn't a better card available that wouldn't require another $150–300.

Exactly ^ Yeah I don't need more... But still tempted  I guess I'm only considering it because I can sell it for more than it cost new.

BUT, to look at from a different angle, at least AMD will get some much needed cash! 

 

Personally, I think this is a good thing... but maybe that's just because I usually use last gen hardware anyway.

Its not just GPU's that have gone up in price either, old A1181 MacBooks are, you could get a fully working one for about £40 last year and now there £120+, pc parts also tend to have price changes because of the time of year, november they tend to rise as people build rigs for the christmas break, they may be high now as people get into pc's because of the steam summer sale, and its the summer holidays, lots of teens have finished there exams and are looking for something to do. higher demand = higher prices. They will come down soon enough, perhaps

I have mixed feelings about this mining craze. Yes, it's a good thing that AMD makes much revenue out of this. They can certainly use the money. On the other hand I'm against these crypto currencies as it's opens many doorways for criminals to their shady business over the web. And the insane pricing of the mid-end cards just makes me feel a bit sad.

I too am glad that AMD is selling out, but would be annoyed if I were actually in the market for a GPU.

 

The capacity for criminal use exists with fiat currency, even moreso than cryptocurrencies granted there are decades of payment systems and financial service infrastructure built around them and it's more readily transferred, accepted/spent, etc. Of course cryptocurrency is not without its unique advantages in terms of criminal use, but basically I would not condemn cryptocurrency just because it has unscrupulous applications.

Block chains are 100% transparent and can be tracked these days, so criminals don't get away with as much has you think. This is because each of the coins have a unique number, in fact the coin is just a unique number.

Eh...non Newegg sellers are garbo even without price hikes. If you filter the seller to Newegg only, I bet a lot of those listing will be replaced by out of stock.

AMD isn't really profiting much off this. They sell a finite amount of cards at an agreed upon price and that seller either sells at a 1 to 1 ratio, a little higher for personal profit or a lot higher to gouge.

True, i was thinking more of the number that they are selling rather than an exact profit margin. at the same time i can see when they sell the second lot of chips they are going to charge for due to the perceived increase in market value at that time. that is if the new requisition order/contracts happens to fall when these high prices are in effect. Because no one else can supply AMD GPU chips they have to either take it or leave it at this higher proposed per unit cost. With the boom in AMD demand i can't see them saying no.

GPUs are going up because of mining.

 

RAM (DDR4) is up due to low supply (Factories can't keep up).

 

SSDs may go up as well because phones are eating a lot of NAND chips.

Wow! Looks like I built my rig just in time (about 6 weeks ago). Managed to get my 1080 for $525.

I remember the rx 470 I bought 5 monthesago. Costed me 150$. Now it costs 400$.
