How critical are WiFi router firmware updates?

Eric Kazer

Just got email about My Router having security update from Netgear. It's a N300. Should I upgrade or just update. Exact model listed in tags. Seems to work OK with Optimum service. WiFi is passwored.

What does the changelog of the update say?

The change logs give a good idea if it's critical. Manufacturer updates should always be taken seriously, however, if it's not too important, maybe wait a few days to a few weeks, then do some research on the update before installing it.

However, are you asking if you should just get a new router over updating the software?

Most of the time it's security features update.

Most of the time WiFi isn't used. Just Ethernet ports.
