Can I really not stream in 4k on Netflix on my PC without a kabylake processor?

Really the requirements are Creators Update (that's fine), Microsoft Edge (well I can set Netflix as my homepage and ignore the browser for everything else), a solid nvidia graphics card (not sure why Netflix needs this but I've got a 1080ti so ok), and a fucking kabylake chip. Doesn't matter which one.

My 5930k is faster than most of the kabylake chips on the market. My damn LG OLEDs built in Netflix app can run 4k and HDR just fine with the terrible processor that's built into the TV. This is literally nothing more than Netflix and Intel trying to force you to upgrade unnecessarily.

Gah.

I'm not too sure, but it's not the processor speed but the architecture. Just intel being mean. Worth a try though.

Its not about the raw power of the CPU, but the fact that only kabylake can decode 10-bit HEVC used by Netflix. Although your 1080ti also has this so it should work with that.

It has to do with the hardware DRM support the iGPU of kabylake has.

The only alternatives will have to come from AMD or Nvidia and iirc neither of them have one.

Should work on 10xx series GPUs regardless of CPU, at least according to this article:

After reading a couple articles, it looks like you need Kaby Lake OR a 10xx series GPU.

Strange. Its definitely not showing in 4k in my edge browser. There is leagues of difference in quality on OITNB on my TVs netflix app vs my PC connected to my receiver.

Well my TVs netflix app supports 4k and HDR. I just like being able to play Overwatch on my main screen and have netflix duplicated on my secondary monitor and up on my TV in 4k. (Monitor for me so I can see it while I play overwatch and on TV for my Fiancée sitting on the couch).

Silly question but are you sure you have the 4k subscription? (it's the most expensive one, $12 iirc)

Yes, I specifically chose the premium option when I signed up. I also have gigabit internet so thats a non issue as well.

Are you a Windows insider? The special build of the Nvidia drivers that supports 4k Netflix is only available to Windows Insider ATM.

They'll likely be coming to normal consumers with the Fall Creators update.

Worth mentioning that if you have a Kaby Lake on a h110~b150~h170~z170 chipset you also can not access Netflix 4k :P

Theoretically as 4K content becomes more and more normal and widespread the paranoia about DRM should eventually die down a bit. But until then, I wouldn't even bother. As long as I have to reconfigure internal hardware and juggle monitors around just to comply with the DRM requirements, I don't consider the feature "available" for real use.

I mean he could try. Maybe there's something we missed.

It's not even an issue of "can your computer decode it?".

I could do it just fine on my 2500K and Radeon 7850 when the DRM was not blocking me.

The problem is that the DRM used, PlayReady, needs specific hardware to work.

Nvidia 10XX GPUs might get support for it soon but until then you're screwed. Welcome to the world of DRM, where paying customers gets fucked in the ass. No lube included.

This was essentially the only way that Microsoft was able to strike a deal with the Movie Studios to allow 4k on the windows platform.

You're right that it can't be played because of PlayReady 3.0, but I have never heard anything about movie studios forcing Microsoft to use it in order to allow 4K on Windows.

In fact, PlayReady 3.0 (and all previous versions too) was developed by Microsoft. For all we know, it might have been Microsoft that went to the move studios and said "hey look at this awesome DRM we are making, do you want to use it?".

Thats quite possible. It appears to depend on which website you're looking at as to whether it was Microsoft initiative or reaction to use PlayReady to lockout 4k content.

-snip-

Well you can look at it several ways.

Microsoft developed it. Hollywood studios adopted it and made it a requirement for services like Netflix.

Is it Microsoft's fault for developing it and offering it to Hollywood? Or is it Hollywood's fault for adopting it and making it mandatory for their movies? I think both are at fault.

Unfortunately I am using older Nvidia drivers because the newer ones break HDR support in PC games. Yup. Why does nothing ever work right 100% of the time =(. I'll just use my TV's netflix app for the time being until NVIDIA and Microsoft figure stuff out.

It's more to do with the fact that they want more money, It isn't really necessary to do this
