Does virustotal scan the file in the compressed archive?

When I upload a RAR, ZIP or any compressed archive to virustotal, If there is in the virus, Is it detect? Must I extract before upload?

According to their website, as long as it's not an encrypted archive it will be able to scan the inner contents
