Nintendo Switch to Charge Canadians $100 for games

It seems some Nintendo fans have found unreasonable prices for games for Canadians.   When looked at in American prices, the cost should be $80 Canadian after exchange rate, like most other games on other platforms.  However, it seems there is a $20 up charge for Canadians, and even sites like amazon.COM are charging a $15-20 "shipping and import fees deposit" for Canadian buyers.

Going even further:
I am in Saskatchewan and I believe this is illegal in our province.  The Saskatchewan Consumer Protection and Business Practices Act outlines certain 'unfair practices'  with fines for corporations being up to $100 000 for a first offence,  and up to $500 000 for further offences. http://www.publications.gov.sk.ca/freelaw/documents/English/Statutes/Statutes/C30-2.pdf

Unfortunately it would take someone who purchased a Switch game (from a retailer in the province for this price tag) to challenge Nintendo in small claims court.  However it would be well worth it as small claims is fairly cheap and informal, and would get Nintendo's attention with the $100 000 fine.

I mean they are saving on unlocked phone fees so the money has to come from somewhere else now

Nintendo switch is not region locked... just set your region to US and buy games digitally?

Perhaps.  With the proliferation of technology we are gaining economies of scale.

The point however is the discriminatory pricing, especially when their competitors are not having any issues with sales.

I just went to Toys“R”Us and Walmart, and Switch games peek at 79.99$ Canadian.

If some stores or sellers on Amazon chooses to charge more, they have the right to do so. You, as a consumer, vote with your wallet.

Due to high demand, there is a market of people who want to pay extra to get the game they want now, and not have to wait, and try a few stores.

Duty fees and administration. There is a paper work that needs to be done, and duty fees (anything over 20$) that needs to be paid.

Wow I never knew it was that bad.  A bit off topic, but distribution rights for media are horrific.  I recently tried to buy a Sarah McLachlan album off hdtracks.com and they wouldn't sell it to me because I was in Canada.

As for the 80$ games in Canada, that is because our currency went down the toilet. This is mostly because of the low interest rates, due to uncertainty due to:

  • Canadians have high level of debts which raises alarm to the US crash that happened a few years ago, because most Canadians don't know how to do a budget. Very sad.
  • Economic uncertainty due to the US.
  • US market is doing very well, and the US currency is very strong.

Interest rate will go up, as the Bank of Canada can't hold it this low due to the rapid inflation rate that the Canada is going to. But it will be a tiny percentage, to reduce the thousands of people who will declare bankruptcy after that increase.

 

Anyway.. good thing I saved up my Canadian Tire money.

Media right is a mess anywhere you go. You have publishers who have different region rights, then you have region laws, rating of the region that needs to be set, than you have the deal with the artists which doesn't cover all regions initially that needs to be changed, and a mess more. The US doesn't feel it as most things in movies, TV and music is made there. But if you try to get content from another country in the US, you have the same ordeal, and you have to wait potentially a long time before it can be sold.
