Has social media created a generation of vapid, self-absorbed narcissists?

Because that's what it feels like. I absolutely loath facebook and I refuse to conform to the norms like most people my age - aka "sheep". It's not just the copious amounts of selfies we're talking about here: it's everything including instagram and tinder. What is wrong with this generation?

There's nothing in this generation that's all that different from other generations. We're just up in eachothers business more than before.

Selfies are definetly not a new thing. We have always been obsessed with out own image.

 

And the rise of social media was inevitable. Every new innovatione in communication has been used to put outselves into other people's life. Back in the day there were phone chatrooms you could call and people used to talk to eachother through shortwave radios. 

Doing it through the internet is no different. 

 

Even Tinder isn't that different from what used to happen. It's have just made hook-up culture easier to manage. Instead of heading to the bar, club or barn dance, you just jump on your phone and swipe left or right. 

It hasn't even changed out sexual habits all that much. People are still starting their sexual life at about the same age now as they were 100 years ago, and there is even evidence to suggest that the current generation is having a lot less sex with less people than previous generations. 

 

TL;DR: There's nothing wrong with this generation. People today is doing what people has always been doing.

If you step back and look EVERY generation previous to the next says the same EXACT thing. They are all failures. They will make the world burn. They don't know how to be adults. The short answer is stuff changes and you have to adapt. I personally don't have any type of social media purely for the fact of your boss looking up what you say or do. Most of it is also a giant waste of time.

Just keeping this here as a Selfies are definetly not a new thing. We have always been obsessed with out own image.

 

And the rise of social media was inevitable. Every new innovatione in communication has been used to put outselves into other people's life. Back in the day there were phone chatrooms you could call and people used to talk to eachother through shortwave radios. 

Doing it through the internet is no different. 

 

Even Tinder isn't that different from what used to happen. It's have just made hook-up culture easier to manage. Instead of heading to the bar, club or barn dance, you just jump on your phone and swipe left or right. 

It hasn't even changed out sexual habits all that much. People are still starting their sexual life at about the same age now as they were 100 years ago, and there is even evidence to suggest that the current generation is having a lot less sex with less people than previous generations. 

 

TL;DR: There's nothing wrong with this generation. People today is doing what people has always been doing.

In the 1940s it was T. V., in the 1950s it was comic books, in the 1980s it was video games and in the 1990s it was computers. Today it's the smartphone that is perceived as the bane of our social life.

 

The reason behind the lowered rate of sex among young people haven't been figured out.

It's speculated that it might be due to easy access to pornography, due to the general scare of STDs or something complete different. No one reason has been determined.

The answer is no, its just that because of social media people with pre-existing narcicistic tendancies are not only rewarded for their behaviour (with interest from social media) but also get far more exposure then they ever would have in the past. 

 

So no the number of narcisists has not gone up, just their visibility in society.

There's absolutely nothing new here.

 

The "manipulation" going on sounds a lot like classic marketing and product reliance.

That has been  going on for over a hundred years.

Ever since psychology became a recognized study, there have been people wanting to profit from it.

Even subconscious marketing isn't even a new thing. Everything from the shelves in Walmart to the floor cleaner used in McDonald's is created with the sole intend of making you buy their products.

I see no reason why the tech industry should be any different.
