Civilization VI - Worth A Second try ?

Hey guys,

So thought i would ask here for the big Civ players. I got completely sucked into Civ V and man did I put in the time, loved the game and did so many games, lost more than won but had such great fun trying different ways to conquer the world :P

That was until I hit the AI wall, and noticed that they really ain't to smart, and the agreements and treaties you could make were very limited. Soon as this penny dropped it basically killed the game for me, and very bleak about that as while the illusion was on I was deeply immersed.

I than turned to Civ VI, immediately the graphics change I did not enjoy but putting that aside the game play just didn't feel good, Not saying its a good or bad game I just didn't click with it and was still hoping the magic that made me love Civ V so much never came. After a small amount of games I uninstalled and went on with my life.

Guess my Question here is how do you guys find it, was I to quick to make a decision ? any suggestions ?

I couldn't get into Civ VI either. The gameplay seemed saturated with flashy, shiny special events, achievements, etc that felt more like a pinball than a board game. Like they game-fied a game, if that makes sense.

And then there's the AI. Diplomacy makes little sense, with sort uf unexplained mood swings, and AI players seem to ignore alliances when deciding who to attack - many suicidal aggression in my game. To top it all, they suck at war: units seemed to move without any coordination, and they often wasted a quantity advantage by not hitting the same target, or simply having some units wander around while others fought.

All in all, I didn't get to finish my first game, as I get bored after achieving a significant advantage over everyone else and basically taking them down militarily at will.

You could always try a higher difficulty level, but compensating weak AI with unfair advantages never worked well for me in the fun department.

I don't know if it's this game or it's me getting old, but I couldn't get that immersive feeling I got from Civ III, Colonization, Alpha Centauri... or that I still get from the Europa Universalis series. It's like there are too many things screaming at me "hey, I am a game mechanic, click this to get that" instead of hiding it behind some make-believe layer.

@SpaceGhostC2C so happy I'm not the only one, Read another recent review and thats why I ended up posting here, I was like Did i completely miss something as the reviewer say singing high praise.

I completely agree that just giving unfair advantage does not make the harder settings better, if anything it really takes a lot out of the game. LOOKING AT YOU XCOM 2, LOOKING AT YOU!

and sucks I missed the boat for a Civ V multiplayer as most of the places are quiet these days.

Any other game you could recommend that you been enjoying lately ?

4 was my personal favourite. Give it a try I feel like it's the only Civ game where the AI is legit.5 was kind of all over the place and everyone in 6 just doesn't care about alliances and treaties

How is the game now with the updates and DLC's compared to this article on the mid-late game and limits in the AI ?

I still play Civ V with my friends on occasion.  I love the game to death.  I couldn't get into Civ VI no matter how hard I tried, or the Civ game where it was in space(forgot the name).

Either Civilization Beyond Earth or Starships. First one was a bit of a let down, second one is a pile of crap,

Beyond Earth is worth it if you can get it on sale for cheap along with the DLC. It's like Civ V but with the most bipolar AI ever, but some of the late game units are kind of cool (giant space lasers, giant robot walkers, flying battleships, colossal genetically engineered aliens, etc)

Civilization Beyond Earth wasn't good IMO. It took away the historical aspect of the game, which is a key component to what makes the series so damn good.

Meh, they were just trying something different. I kind of like how everything in that game is like the post future tech tree I've always wanted in Civ but have never gotten. It's just a shame that so many of the ideas in that game are so poorly implemented.

I don't know man, Civ 5 has some pretty bipolar AI at times.  Once, I was practically allies with Washington, but he then denounced me because I settled near one of this enemies .-.

That's true, and BE has the exact same issue maybe even a little worse. I swear sometimes it feels like if you establish a new city anywhere on the same continent as another faction they'll denounce you and of course you don't have the option to do the same in return. One of the crippling problems with BE though is that for every faction there are two favorability scales for each faction which dictates how they respond to you. One is Respect the other is Fear. An interesting idea in theory but in practice it's horribly unbalanced because the respect meter means nothing, basically if they view you as being weak you could be allies with maxed out respect and sometimes they'll just declare war on you because they can. If you have the fear level maxed out no one will fuck with you but this kind of breaks the game because it incentivizes you to play the game with military conquest in mind. One thing that is kind of cool though is they've greatly improved the peace negotiation process. Basically through the course of a war each side gains a certain number of points and at the conclusion whoever has the most points can pick and choose their "terms", basically which cities they want to claim, which technologies they want for themselves, etc.

I have only the base game. Apparently, with the Utopia DLC, it is way better but I haven't played long enough to notice any AI exploits or stupidity yet.
