Hey everyone, i have few propably very stupid questions about ddos and vpn.

1) If my original IP gets DoS'ed or DDoS'ed can turning on VPN speed up my internet ?
2) If using Very fast VPN service on very slow internet can it boost dl speeds, browsing or atleast reduce ping in games ?

I personally think that the answer is negative to both questions, cause the original internet must be as fast as VPN to reach VPN's full potential and if DDoS'ed it would be struggle to maintain connection to VPN service.
Just wanna make 100% sure, cause i heard alot ppl saying use VPN when you're ddosed ( propably they mean to protect from hackers getting your original IP ) or that VPN can boost internet speed in some cases.

VPNs don't reduce ping. They increase it if anything.

Main System: Phobos

Your IP will most likely never get DDoSed unless you post your public IP on the internet somewhere... so don't do that and you will be fine.

I have had a few instances of playing Rocket League with my VPN on where my ping lowered by like... 10-15... but it's negligible. VPNs encrypt your traffic and increases the number of hops you do over the network. So yes, it will slow you down.

No, you can't have a slow internet and get faster internet by using a VPN. You get what you pay for directly from your modem to your router.

1) No if you get DDosed then your router has too many traffic to handle. When you connect to a vpn you still have to go through your router. If you get DDosed much then talk to your provider about getting a new ip address then only connect with a VPN so they dont know your real ip.

2) Most of the time it will increase your ping. There are some exceptions though. Especially if you are living far away. When you live in Europe and you are connecting to an American server then sometimes connecting to an American VPN before connecting to the server will decrease your ping.

The boosting your internet is because some ISP's throttle your internet traffic for some applications (Like torrents and Netflix for instance). With a VPN they don't know what traffic is going through them so they can't throttle it.

Just for info: Ping is not related to your internet speed. Ping is just the latency between you and the server. You can have a 1Gbps connection and high ping but still download fast.

PC: Case: Cooler Master CM690 II - PSU: Cooler Master G650M - RAM: Transcend 4x 8Gb DDR3 1333Mhz - MoBo: Gigabyte Z87x-D3H - CPU: i5 4670K @ 4.5Ghz - GPU: MSI GTX1060 ARMOR OC - Hard disks: 4x 500Gb Seagate enterprise in RAID 0 - SSD: Crucial M4 128Gb

Ping and Speed can go faster in very special scenarios.

For ping you VPN connection must decrease the number of hops, but usually this does not happen and their is also added overhead with encrypting traffic.

For speed some VPN providers also run compression which can improve speed in theory but usually unless you are sending/receiving easily compressible content it will not help. (it is the reason my speedtest.net scores can be off with a vpn on)

If your main IP address gets ddosd, Connecting to a VPN will do absolutely nothing. Zero. I know exactly what you're thinking and it will not work. You won't even be able to connect to the VPN (because you won't be online).

If the VPN's IP address gets ddosd, the datacenter will simply mitigate the attack. If they they have a big enough infrastructure.

If your computer is still slow or internet activity is unspeakably high, your computer may be a victim of a botnet (malicious software that zombifies other machines for a DoS attack), and you'll want to run a MBAM scan.

You could also change your IP address.  Either release/renew your private address or unplug your modem for a few minutes to reset your public one (usually those are dynamic).

A VPN helps greatly in preventing this in the future since the address is usually different each time you log in, and the better providers have anti-DDoS measures and encryption to boot.
