War Thunder: Able to skip researching tanks?

I recently got the Sturmpanzer II in War Thunder. After that, I was able to move to the II rank vehicles. However, I could get the J1 panzer without needing the F/J, but couldn't skip the 234/2 and go to the Marder? How does this work?  I can skip some vehicles but to move on I have to get the vehicle before it for others?

You need the tanks in one line to get the next one and a certain amount of tanks in each tier before you can move to the next tier. The higher the tier, the higher your enemies, the more you get killed ?. Im tier5, but havent played in a while.
