Hi, I'm looking to build a new computer with a Ryzen CPU as opposed to my current i7 build. I know I want an 1800x, but I am not sure about the other components. I am looking to spend under $2500. These are my questions/concerns.

1. I was thinking about buying a 1080 ti founders, but I have 3 1080 displays, and a 1440 display, plus VR. So, it would be nice to have more outputs, but I have no experience with SLI and don't know the performance changes with say, two 1080s instead of one 1080 ti founders.

2. I am pretty much up in the air on the board I want, I am going for a high performance build that is mainly black and white and those are my only concerns.

3. I am not familiar with how much RAM speed affects performance, especially with the new Ryzen chip set.

4. Storage, specifically the SSD for my OS, is rather unfamiliar to me. I do not know what the performance differences are for M.2 vs SATA vs PCIe, if it is even worth moving away from traditional SATA drives that is.

5. What kinds of power supply is needed for say, an overclocked Ryzen and potential SLI?

Lastly, I have nice peripherals that I like already so that is not an issue. Also, I can handle the cooling part and anything else I did not include above.

If you have any suggestions, feel free to suggest or help me learn a thing or two!

I know I could google all my questions, but I wanted to try out the LTT forums after being a fan for so long.

Thanks in advance!

I want you to consider this build I have saved on PCPartPicker. It uses the Ryzen 7 1700 instead, which can be overclocked to 1800X speeds.

Don't get 1800X, not a good value, get 1700 or 1700X
Don't get Founders card unless you're building a SFF PC
RAM speed matters in Ryzen, preferably 3000 or higher for best performance
SATA SSD is good enough for everyday use (like 850 EVO), M.2 is just a form factor that comes with either SATA or NVMe interface
750W or above IMO, make sure you got a PSU with nice build quality

Thanks for all the advice thus far. I apologize for the lack of knowledge and research I did before hand. Also, I know this PC is planned to be a little overkill, but it is a gift to me as I continue studying engineering at university. So, I am not entirely concerned with budget, and I also do rendering with my current build and it isn't the best machine for it.

Be careful with recommending memory that may not run at full speed on Ryzen!

That will NOT run at full speed until AMD releases the Hynix patch, which is meant to come with the next AGEIA update

There is a couple verified kits, like the G.Skill Trident Z 3200Mhz CL14, which was rebranded as the Flare X 3200Mhz CL14 kit.

Is it worth the extra $70? Doubt it.

The QVL list is basically states which kits are guaranteed to run at their rated speeds. There's a decent chance to get the Ripjaws to V at its full 3200MHz speed... if not, even 2933MHz would work.

Fair point, but the max you'll get on Ryzen with Hynix or lower end Samsung kits is 2933, and that's with a lot of tinkering.

It isn't worth the extra, but the option is there.
