I found someone selling a used reference 980 for $220. Been planning to use a Sapphire RX580 Nitro+ (typically around $260) in a black/white/silver build. It'll be in a Midtower case on a full sized ATX motherboard. Given these two options(and the information), I'd love to know what you would honestly go for and why.

If you can afford the RX580, then get that instead. Overall it's a faster card than a GTX 980 which is slightly slower than or on par with a GTX 1060.

What? A GTX 980 is a lot faster once you overclock it. The 580 has double the vram though.

While the RX 580 is newer, has double the VRAM and a better cooling solution, the two cards will trade blows in games.

Personally, if FreeSync wasn't a concern, I'd go for the GTX 980 because I can't justify the extra $40.

But then again, $260 is a bit high for a RX 580 8GB. If you look hard enough, they frequently go on sale for about $200-220.

It's not like the RX580 can't be overclocked, assuming OP even cares to OC 9_9

$220 is too expensive for a used reference GTX980.

You said it's 980 <= 1060. The 980 is significantly faster than the 1060 once overclocked. And no, the 1060 does not have the overclocking reach of the 980, it has half the cudacores. The 980 is only the same as the 1060 because they shipped with 1216mhz.

the cuda cores mean nothing other than that it wont do as well in future games.
the 1060 is around equal to a 980 assuming you can get a good overclock

480 reference is also hot, not sure what that's supposed to mean.

i beat you by 1 :P
but he is comparing a reference 980 to a sapphire 580. i own 2 480s, one is reference and it sucks lol. no argument there :P

Heh, but try and find a 1060 that does this score. 480 is a much faster piece of hardware than the 1060.

lol
1060s arent TERRIBLE for gaming, but they require more optimization. the 480s have more tflops of power so they will do better in benchmarks

I'd say for $220 get the 980.

GTX 980 should be slightly faster, and if it is slightly cheaper as well, I'd go for it.. By the time games use 8GB VRAM, the RX580 will be too slow to run them anyway. 4GB on the GTX 980 should be plenty for the time being. You can turn up the textures to ULTRA in most games nowadays, and you still dont hit 4GB.

Depends on your tolerance for 2nd hand hardware though. Keep in mind that if the GTX980 dies in 6 months time, you are out of luck.

You could also get a 4GB RX580 for $210. Like this: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&O=&Q=&ap=y&c3api=1876%2C{creative}%2C{keyword}&gclid=CM_d2OPNg9QCFYs8gQodbkYPZA&is=REG&m=Y&sku=1334512

It will be slightly slower than the GTX980, but you get warranty with it!
