are i5 worth anymore? why people still recommending r5 if i5 on games performs better?

Because it more bang for the buck. (R5). You need overclock your R5 to get similar performance and someone people aren't comfortable with that. 

 

i5 is still worth it in some cases, such as 4th generation.

They trade in averages, minimums and frame times are overall more consistent, also generally cheaper.

Ryzen has a higher core and thread count for the same price, and while they are a frame or two behind the i5s their 1% and 0.1% lows are generally much better, providing a smoother experience with less stutter. The higher core count contributes to their "future-proofness".

The average framerate is more or less the same while the 0.1/1% minimums and the frametimes are usually better. Plus, the i5 is out of the league in anything highly multithreaded.

 

You shouldn't be paying $200+ for a quad core.

Yeah, as said above, i5s are too expensive for what they offer, 4C/4T is just not good-enough anymore especially if paired with a high-end graphics card such as the GTX 1070/1080 and above. R5 1600 will not only last longer than a 7600K, offer smoother gameplay and running heavy productivity tasks, it's also cheaper and allows you to pair it with a faster GPU.

 

Basically the same reason you'd choose an i7-5820K/6800K over an i5-7600K in terms of performance.

Depends on what price you pay, not worth getting a i5 for the $200 price point. 

If you got a Skylake/Kaby i5 for around the $100 price point then that's a different story.
