GTX 1070 EVGA FTW thermal pads and overheating?

Now I remember that there were some problems with GTX 1070 EVGA ACX 3.0 with VRM overheating, and I would just like to check if anyone know, if that was fixed, and those GPUs are now being sold with this problem fixed?

Or should I stay away from this lineup, and buy something else instead?

The issue wasn't VRMs overheating, it was in fact defective components that EVGA were originally supplied to build their previous GPUs. The VRMs can handle really high temps, 120º centigrade maximum.

 

But recently EVGA decided to go absolutely insane with cooling, like waaay overkill for the VRMs. But having cooling for the VRMs is better than having no cooling.

There's no issue. I actually haven't even bothered to install the thermal pads I got for my card. Temps are fine.

Agree, GPU temps are good, even on SLAVE bios with 122% power, though anything to keep the VRMs cooler (since there is no Temp Sensor there) is ideal.

The problem has been addressed. Any new cards purchased should have the fix. 

 

punch in the model number of the card you are looking at here to see if the fix is indeed on it.

After I RMA'd my 1070FTW the replacement did not have the pads.

I didn't have the issues, but from what EVGA has told me, the fix has gone out to all major retailers.

Did you RMA it with the retailer or did you send it to EVGA directly? I helped someone with an RMA of a 1080 FTW and his had the thermal pads applied. We sent it back to EVGA directly.

You should. According to Gamers Nexus, after doing hours of testing, they can confirm that the thermal pads do indeed reduce the PCB temperature. Their testing methodology is as scientific as it gets!

I assume it's fixed, this is EVGA. 2 points however:

One,  EVGA is amongst the most beloved companies in the industry because their customer service is excellent. I've heard stories of peoples GPUs dying, and EVGA not only replacing them quickly, but even giving free upgrades. Worst case scenario, you have to RMA and you might get free shit.

 

Two, Vega is apparently coming in June. If your not in a rush, might be worth the wait, it looks promising.

It's true that the temperature will be lower, but not by much. Too much trouble lol

Did you read the graphs? According to their tests, the temperatures, especially the PCB backside dropped by as much as ~20º centigrade.

 

Installing the thermal pads should be simple, if you're careful not to damage anything on the PCB.

Hmm that's quite a different number than what I saw from Jayztwocents. I'll look into this a bit more.

Yep because they install K-type probes in key points that are pre-calibrated with a ice bath and hot water bath, and are within +/- ~2º centigrade. They are then logged using temperature monitors.

 

Look at their testing methodology for the full details.

Thanks everyone for answers. I already ordered this GPU, and if I will notice any problems, I will just request new one.

But I do think, that EVGA is smart enough, to ship fixed cards, 8 month after they realized about that problem

"problem" more like.

 

my card runs just fine without it. when you do get it, run the slave bios (switch right next to the power connector).
