I currently rock a i5 2400, and a stock Gateway mobo, and want a little bit more longetivity to my systems life. Is it worth it to grab a P67 mobo, and an i7 2600k before getting one is expensive? Or should I just stick with my current chip, and mobo, and worry more about my GPU (MSi GTX 1050 Ti 4GT OC)?

Frankly I wouldn't do anything other than keep saving money for a worthy full mobo+ram+cpu upgrade, this system as it is works in balance and if you just upgrade either sides you'll get bottlenecked on the side you leave as it is.

Was considering getting a 480 for a while. But its either new mobo and CPU, or new GPU, as I dont have a job and all my money is from Christmas or birthday.

1: G R E A T U S E R N A M E

2: Great choice of Location

3: That GPU is fine, the 2400 is holding it back. Id say see how much you can get a 6500 and a H110 mobo for

not that, i was pointing out that a 2600k is still a capable CPU, you can throw in a good cpu and be fine with it.

Yeah, thats the issue I have somewhat. Granted, the CPU upgrade will have my PC running at full tilt for maybe 5 more years, with me being able to upgrade GPU over time.

1-bad idea, ryzen is the way to go if OP wants to get a budget build, i5s are crap

2- i7 2600k can outperform the build you are talking about.

6500 is too expensive for me. I would like to stay under $100-$200 for the upgrades

I have a strong hate for AMD chips. I am building a system with low airflow, and high heat, and Intel chips stay way cooler than AMD. Plus I want to stay in the second hand market.

Definitely get a 2600k + mobo, you'll be able to upgrade around Chrismas when the 480/580/1060 should be quite cheap second hand with people getting/anticipating the next gen of mid range cards.

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

Getting the 2600k would somewhat work fine yes, but it is such an old chip... I would personally consider Ryzen 5 pathway... but really your budget is tight... save for a bit more would be my advise, at the end of the year we'll have hyper-threaded coffee lake i5's those might be worth the buck again.

AMD has changed, its better than you think now. when building a system look for parts that fit your needs instead of fanboysm.

It'll be either of those, nothing is 100% confirmed yet but the evidences do point out to either 4c/8t or 6c/6t time will tell us for sure.

They might even go the route of both I suppose, having a 6c/6t i5 that is a cut down 6c/12t i7 as well as a cut down 4/8 from the same 6/12 i7 but some cores were dead.

I am a bit messed up because I get confused with Coffee Lake and Canon Lake, but what I read last seems it would be Pentium 2c/4t, i3 4c/4t, i5 4c/8t, i7 6c/12t.

But i5 6c/6t also makes plenty of sense, either ways it'll be a lot better than what we have nowadays xD

I'm a big fan of ryzen but if a 6c/6t i5 competed with the 1400 I'd probably take the 6 true cores :/
