So I'm trying to play dark souls, after multiple attempts I've given up on using mouse and keyboard to to the abysmal support, and am trying to use my controller. It is a wireless xbox 360 controller, that I am connecting to my pc via one of thseo play and charge kit things, and I just cant get it to work. I've installed drivers from microsofts site, but it still doesn't appear in device manager, and it doesn't work in game. Help?

Unfortunately the play and charge kits for X360 only charge the controller, so it won't work... - sorry :( Your only option is the wireless dongle as mentioned above.

I will only ever answer to the best of my ability - there is absolutely no promises that I will be correct. Or helpful. At all.

Yup. Microsoft requires the USB dongle I believe... even for the super high end Xbox One Pro controllers. Though I think you can use a micro USB cable?

Yeah, XBONE controllers work with a micro USB cable, as do PS4 controllers

Seems 360 ones don't:

Set up a wireless controller on a Windows PC

Note A standard Xbox 360 wireless controller can be connected to a Windows PC, but you must have an Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver to play games, even if you have an Xbox 360 Play & Charge Kit.

And also we see why PS4s are cooler than Xbones...

Some Xbone can connect via bluetooth too if your PC has it, if not use Wireless Adapter/Receiver. And it connects via USB cable as well for wired mode.

Xbox 360 however doesn't connect via USB cable unlike Dualshock 3/4 from PS

I know that I tried a lot to set my x360 old controller on the PC and nothing seemed to work and then it seemed I needed to buy an adapter that cost as much as the controller itself lol

I just bought a generic 5$ USB gamepad and use x360ce and everything works like a charm [:

only way is the wireless receiver, but you can get them for like $5 but unlike the official one you need to manually install the drivers.
