Hey, I've been having an issue for the past two days now where the OS does not boot. It either restarts during boot or just freezes. The BIOS works fine. I couldn't run any live environments off the USB, other than memtest86. Running memtest, cores 0, 2 and 3 work fine. Running memtest with core 1 freezes the computer immediately after starting the test and I have to manually reboot. Is this likely a case of core 1 being dead?

Could be bent pins in the socket,or even broken, what are the specs, sounds like a old chip or a core i5 or i3 or pentium

It's an i5-6500 in an MSI Z170A PC MATE. Bent pins I doubt very much, this problem happened overnight and I hadn't taken the CPU out since I bought and installed it over a year ago. Visually looking at the socket I can't see any bent or broken pins.

Probably RMA,or the core might have gotten disabled somehow and when Memtest86+ sees it,it cant do anything and hangs, check the BIOS

Hah, I wish, warranty expired 2 months ago. I did go through the bios but I didn't see anything about disabling individual cores.

Best option is do a full CMOS reset then run memtest again, if the core still fails after that then it likely is broken.
