When plugged in via Ethernet it runs amazingly and is getting the full 56mbps but on wifi it is getting like 5mbps. the internet takes forever to load and my mothers main use is internet. i am using an Acer Aspire V and it runs internet at the 56mbps range. any ideas on what the problem is?

The WIFI chip is probably pretty shitty. Upgrade to a dual-band 5Ghz 802.11 AC chip and it should be totally fine.

a quick way to check is to swap the WIFI cards between your and your mom's laptop, and see if performance flip-flops

56mbps o.O....i don't think that is correct on ehternet, your link should be 100/1000mbps and you speed should be what ever is your plan. With WIFI and ethernet you can go into the properties of the adapter to make it more snappier by changing different parameters, as in the WIFI case you should change the wireless signal from auto to say N or AC from best speeds.

Does the speed change when you get closer or further away from the router? Sounds like a cheap wireless chip with a small range. Then again could also be your router.
