Hello LTT Community,

I am currently looking to build a new primary gaming /media PC and given that the new Ryzen CPU's and other budget performance components have been released since I last did this, I would like to reach out to the community of experts to get their advisement on going forward with which components to purchase considering the following:

- Budget $1500-$2k max > please provide the very best performance gaming build within this budget

- AMD Ryzen looks very attractive for performance PC builds at the moment so I'm currently leaning towards that for a CPU , but both AMD and Intel CPU recommendations are acceptable

- Case will be a small/mid size tower (interested in tempered glass towers/windowed cases).

- Please provide a direct link using PC part picker (or equivalent tool) to show exact components for your suggested build.

- Please only provide suggestions if you're experienced with PC builds and current with performance hardware yourself.

- Upon posting your suggestions, please give a brief description on why you selected the performance components you did.

- Additionally, provide any suggestions you have for monitors to fit within (or just slightly out of) this budget.

Thank you all in advance for taking the time to assist me in this build, as I can assure you that it's much appreciated.

I think the 1700X is the best value Ryzen 7 CPU. You can overclock it to near 1800X speeds, so it is a pretty good CPU.

16GB of RAM is more than enough and Ryzen does prefer high speed RAM (hence it being a 3000MHz kit).

1080 Because it's much cheaper than the 1080 Ti but it is still a very modern high-end GPU.

The power supply I chose is a brilliant quality PSU, but it is also powerful enough to power your PC without any problems.

The case just looks really nice, no other reason why :P

Liquid Cooler is because if you'll be overclocking and gaming, you will want to keep your CPU cool.

The SSD is a boot drive with just Windows or whatever on it.

The high capacity HDD is for storing your files and games on.

The motherboard is a good motherboard for the price, it's ATX, and it's from a reputable brand.

It would cost around $1.6k in total (without Windows).

Does the budget include monitor and peripherals or no?

Also, what do you mean by media pc?

Completely disagree, 1700 is best value Ryzen CPU.

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

No you didn't, you said it was the best value Ryzen 7 CPU.

I just said Ryzen CPU because I'm too lazy to type the 7 :P.

Why not save $70?

Thank you for your quick replies. I noticed that both (and most others) tend to suggest the Samsung 850 Evo for the SSD, but what about NVMe/M2 performance SSD's? Although you'd probably know better than me, don't NVMe/M2 SSD's perform better (are overall faster) than the 2.5 form factor SSDs? Due to SSDs being one of the single most important components in your system for performance, I want to make sure that I spare no expense on this component.

- The size of the SSD can be small, as it will only be used for games/a few apps, and everything else will be put on a HDD storage drive.

Yes, the budget is intended to include peripherals (minus mouse and keyboard so just monitor is required)

Streaming your gameplay or streaming videos? Or as a sort of home server?

The main reason we usually don't is because nvme doesn't actually improve boot times or app launch times, due to the bottleneck being elsewhere.
