i would hope anyone who's doing a 1k budget build would at least look around some more to see if there's a better option, instead of just clicking on the first video (probably linus's) and then hoping its great.

Bitwit kyle didn't do a much better job with his usd850 budget PC that used a $25 non-80-plus EVGA PSU...

Paul's build is much more balanced, my only critique (mind you a small one) is that he could shave some bucks here and there for a 30-40usd Air Cooler, which would definitively be better than the stock one.

The only way I can see Linus genuinely thinking going Intel with that $1000 build was a good idea, is because the video was filmed weeks ago, either just before Ryzen or right after when it wasn't that great before a patch came out and fixed it.

The fact that he puts in a 480 instead of the more recent 580 also shows that it was at least before the rx580 came out.

 

That and because Be Quiet made him put their cooler, the case and PSU in it. While Paul's Corsair sponsorship just had him put RAM in there, no third party cooler or expensive case, so he saved nearly $100 on that which he could spend elsewhere. Linus could've put better/cheaper stuff to replace those expensive Be Quiet parts and get better parts for the rest of the build with the saved money if he didn't have that sponsorship forcing his hand.

 

Edit : And it was pretty much confirmed during WAN show. Ryzen came out too late for the video.

3) I'm pretty sure I could pick apart either build and make a better parts list for the money if I spent an hour on it - the video format is more entertainment oriented and it also shows you how to put all that stuff together (hence the "build guide" in the title) which I couldn't do in a forum post. Also bear in mind sometimes they try to reuse parts they already have for multiple reasons, which means they might go for a less optimal choice in exchange for not having to order something.

They can ask to borrow parts but it takes longer than they probably want to invest in a single video. Again, it's more of a guide on how to assemble it once you have the parts rather than what parts to buy.

They addressed a lot of the controversy in this week's WAN show:

 

(I time stamped it)

 

TL;DW: 

- The original script was written before Ryzen 5 was available and they already had other parts

- It was shot before the 580 was announced. 

- While shooting, they also realized Ryzen 5 would've made more sense but it was too late to replace at that point. Ryzen also hadn't matured as much as it has today.

 

I think a lot of people fail to see that LTT is a huge company (for YouTube channel standards) that does a lot of shit and planning in advance. Paul's Hardware is, afaik, a one man show. This allows him to probably have a looser schedule and makes him able to have shorter production cycles.

Yes, they could have done a better job with the PC in the build guide, however, I don't see them claiming it's the "best" in the title or anything. And it's a build guide video, not a suggested build or best value build video.

 

It's also sponsored, so who knows, maybe BeQuiet came up with the entire build for the video. Or maybe Linus just used what they had around for the build along with what BeQuiet sent over.

I remember back when Linus took honor in saying that sponsors never influenced the results of videos. He was bragging about how he would never let Intel sponsor a video which could have to do with AMD, because it could influence (or at the least give off the impression) the video.

That's how you gain respect. Your excuse is actually an argument for why you should just not watch Linus in general. He will just say whatever he gets paid to say. Like a untrustworthy cars salesman who would sell his mother if it was legal.

If you're OK with him being a puppet in his buying and build guides, just using whatever he get paid to use, then what makes you think he is not being paid by for example Nvidia to use specific games and/or settings in their GPU benchmarks?

 

"His benchmarks are being manipulated by Nvidia but that's OK because he is a company so he needs to make money!"

You as a customer (because that's what you are to Linus), should not give a crap about how much or little money Linus makes. All you should care about is the content he puts out, and content like his 1000 dollar build video was so bad I actually think people who watch it will end up in a worse state than if they didn't watch it. It is so bad that it can harm viewers.

If your excuse is that Linus is running a company, then stop treating it as if it was a charity. If it's a business then they should not get free passes for putting out crappy products.

So So true, I've seen bigger and smaller Youtube channels Pull videos and release a explanation video within 12 hours, just find this really disappointing and franky I've been watching less of him anyways this was just the last little bit.

Could they have done a better job with the overall build? Yes. Does that mean that it'd be worth it to go back, delete all the footage, create a new build, order new parts if needed, wait for them to arrive, record all of it, then use that? No.

I know, the video in question isn't the compensator 2.0, however, the point I'm making is about sponsored projects in general. Notice where it says "With the intention of giving the audience build ideas or teaching them how to put them together."

 

The video is showing off a $1,000 PC, and how to build it, hence being called a "Build Guide". If it were called "Best PC for $1,000" or "Best $1,000 PC Build Guide", then yes, they should have definitely gone with better hardware, but instead, the video is called "$1,000 Gaming PC BUILD GUIDE!". It's showing how to make a $1,000 Gaming PC, not the best build you can make for $1,000.

 

All in all, it's really not as big of a deal as people are trying to make it out to be. (Just like a lot of things...) If they had claimed it was the best value pc, or best performing pc that you can make for $1,000, then I'd completely agree that they should have scrapped the footage and gone with better hardware, or just have gone with better hardware from the start, but since it's just a $1,000 Gaming PC Build Guide, it's not that big of a deal.
