I'd step down to a 1400, throw in a 120gb SSD, and change the PSU to a Corsair CX450m.

Its worth keeping the 1500X if he can afford to, better stock cooler and 2x L3 cache which had ~10% difference in game performance as tested by hardware unboxed

But how much more is the 1500x than the 1400? If the 1400 is a bunch more cheaper then go for the 1400 you get less performance but more money to spend for a gpu or storage

For the money he could get a better aftermarket cooler that beats the better stock cooler, and that extra cache only nets a 0-5%~ boost when comparing both at the same clockspeed (and of course, that's with a 1080Ti, not a 580, with a 480 there's basically no difference).

An SSD is a must really with new PCs even a small 1 for fast boot times.

580 is slightly better than the 1060 in most popular titles now as well as being cheaper. Also AMD cards are well known for aging better because Nvidia drop driver updates for older architectures like a stone when a new one is out. That 1060 in your build is a mini card and should not be considered a true 1060 as it will perform poorer thermally and thermal throttle.

This is a tier 3 psu and will not kill your components.

£90 over I know but you'll still be best served by saving up a little longer and doing it this way rather than cutting too many corners.

5% worth it imo, also price diff is £20 and the wraith spire is a great stock cooler so worth keeping the 1500X here.

A Cryorig H7 or BeQuiet Pure Rock are better and quieter. And paying an extra £20 for 0-5% performance isn't worthwhile when that money could be better spent elsewhere (especially when it's 0% performance when paired with the GPU being bought).
