I've got a nice looking fan that I want to put on my Cooler Master d92. Only problem is that it spins the right way, but it'll be ugly if I put it on 'the right way'. So I want to flip it and make it spin the other way.

Swapping the power and ground don't seem to do anything. It doesn't power on.

How can I pull this off without rewiring the motor? Tbh I can do it but it's a pain in the ass and time consuming.

The usually have polarity protection with a diode to prevent that from occurring, since spinning a fan backwards yields very little performance due to the shape of the blades being directional.

That's more of the point.

As in practically useless.

There are three components on the board I can get to without taking the whole thing apart. One is labeled IC2, ZD2 and ZD3. There's an R2 underneath the motor that I can't reach without removing the motor. Any of these?

no idea

You can't do that.

You need a fan that's designed to spin both ways if you want to be able to reverse the rotation, which almost all computer fans cannot do.

They are brushless fans and contain a PCB that changes the phases in one direction only.

The blades are also designed to move air in only one direction.

So short the diode?

and now it goes boom, it normally has a capictor.

It would be a good amount of work to make it spin the other way as its a brushless dc motor and you have to mess with the hall effect sensor.

This fan is from an old Celeron machine, the fan looks really cool so I painted the blades red and lef the motor mount black. I doubt it's got any sort of sensors like that.

i have taken fans apart from the 80's there all the same, bushless dc motor with a hall effect sensor, take it apart if you want, if won't help.

never seen one.

The fans that spin in reverse have to have it as a feature, these aren't normal dc bushed motors.

Motors themselves are designed to be able to reverse. The fans though, maybe not.

Fan in question.

Not all motors can be reversed.

Take the sticker off the back of the fan, pop the retention clip off and the blades will come right off.

How do you think I painted it? That ain't no noob paint job.

Edit: Flipping the magnet on the center piece? Would that work or just prevent a spin?

That just let's you take the fan blades off. Won't affect the spin.
