So I currently have a z97 build. I have a friend possibly looking to buy it.  So my question is if I go and build a new PC what architecture should I use? I use the pc for gaming at 1080p at the moment, Adobe programs like photoshop illustrator and similar programs and of course using it as a regular computer.  I want this system to be good for the next few years. X99 has the advantage with more cores and the ability to have more memory and pcie lanes. 1151 has the ability just with a better budget and overall good system and ryzen well Yea its ryzen so. Let me know what you think and also budget is around 1500 US. No peripherals or OS needed and only requirement for the system is the NZXT kraken x62 for the cooler. Also plan on overclocking

Current Rig=  AMD Ryzen 9 5900x, Asus Crosshair Hero VIII, EVGA RTX 3070 FTW3 ultra, 32gb Corsair Vengence Pro RGB 3000hz White, EVGA 750 P2 PSU, 1TB Samsung 980 Pro, 500gb samsung 860 evo, 250GB Samsung 850 evo, 2TB Samsung 970 Evo Plus, 2TB seagate firecuda sshd,  LianLi PC 011 Dynamic XL ROG edition, Corsair h150i elite capelix

1600 probably. 7700k if you're going to miss that 6fps because of the IPC. X99 is going to be replaced by X299 later this year.

Ryzen 5 3600 stock | 2x16GB C13 3200MHz (AFR) | GTX 760 (Sold the VII)| ASUS Prime X570-P | 6TB WD Gold (128MB Cache, 2017)

Samsung 850 EVO 240 GB

138 is a good number.

If gaming and Adobe products are your thing, 1151 will suit you well.  Skylake / Kaby Lake are as fast as it gets for use with Photoshop / Illustrator.  Premiere will favor more cores during final renders and previewing so Ryzen / x99 would benefit you there, but I didn't see Premiere on your list so that may not be relevant.

Probaly won't be using premier but may be using after affects so I don't know if that affects anything

Stick with what you have it's a perfectly fine machine for the years to come and nothing you can buy is a worthy upgrade to what you have unless we are talking about a high-end workstation machine.

Upgrade your GPU instead...960 is a weak ass card.
