im looking looking for a quad core CPU for my inspiron 9400 that is compatable with mPGA/socket 479. if you have a suggestion or know where to buy one or evan know someone who might know please leave comment/reply.

my current CPU is an intel core 2 duo T7200 with a min clock of 1GHz and a max clock of 2 GHz.

You're going to have a few issues there.  The T7200 is a Merom CPU, socket M.  You need Socket P to support the quad cores, ie: the Q9x00 series.  Plus you'd need firmware support and support for higher power dissipation.

So basically its not going to happen.  Your cheapest bet at this point is probably to find a Sandy/Ivy Bridge laptop, used, with an i7-xxxxQM processor.

There is a total of 3 mPGA 478 laptop CPU quadcores (QX9300, Q9100, Q9000), I believe mPGA 478 and 479 are compatible, but your current CPU has a TDP of 34W, the quad cores have a TDP of 45W (so the cooling would be inadequate), and the FSB of your current CPU is 667MHz, the quad cores require a FSB of at least 1066MHz, which I doubt your laptop would support.

Your laptop is old, and isn't worth upgrading, an 1st or 2nd gen i3/i5/i7 powered HP Probook, HP Elitebook, Dell Latitude, Dell Vostro or Lenovo Thinkpad is what I would recomened you replace your laptop with.

also, im serious about needing a PSU for the "cassless" build. inface, thats the last thing i need before i can do anything to or with it.

It is a Pentium 4 based server. Don't waste your money on it.

too late, i already bought 2 ram sticks for it. i found most of the other parts it needs. all it needs now is a Working PSU with a 24 pin main power cable and 16 pin CPU power cable. btw, do you know if an 8 pin CPU power cable would work with it? i dought i can find a PSU with 16 pin cpu power cable.
