Posted April 19, 2017 Hi everyone, I built a budget system with the idea of adding onto as time goes by. I have an amd athlon 860k processor and just the other day I added an aftermarket cooler with a goal of achieving a bit more performance. I went with the Coolermaster Hyper D92 because the 212 evo was just slightly too tall. I disabled the turboboost. Overclocked to 4.3 and the voltage to 1.40 (with turbo it was running at 4.0 overclock with 1.435 volts). HWMonitor is reading temps of 76 degrees C and AMD overdrive says I have 43 degrees C thermal margin. I'm confused because 76 is higher than the manufacturer recommended temp of 72 yet the amd overdrive software which i was told was more accurate is basically saying my cpu is nice and cool... And this cooler should more than handle this overclock especially since i tweaked all fans in the bios to "full speed". Any advice? Should i worry about the HWMonitor temps or trust Overdrive? Posted April 19, 2017 Was your system at idle when you got those temps, or at full CPU load. Also, HWMonitor has moar temp issues, as goes for MANY of the 3rd party softwares. I used to get all kinds of temps on my previous system. (AMD Athlon X2 4200+ or something like that, where some temp values were sub zero) Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/768673-overclocking-are-my-temps-too-high/#findComment-9704258 Share on other sites
 Posted April 19, 2017 HWmonitor reports two temps the Package Temp and the CPU Temp, the Package temp is usually higher than the CPU temp, but it should not be that different. Usually it is around 10c. Link to comment https://linustechtips.com/topic/768673-overclocking-are-my-temps-too-high/#findComment-9704260 Share on other sites
 Posted April 19, 2017 Author I have been running a "stability test" (all boxes checked" using the amd overdrive software. I'm planning on increasing the overclock slitghly, running the stability test for 1 hour and increase slightly again. I'd like to go as high as I can without exceeding amd's max recommended voltage of 1.475. Once I find the "max" ill do a 24hr stability test and stress test. Posted April 19, 2017 Author Still not too confident. Does anyone have experience with OverDrive? Could I just go by the overclock based on the thermal margin (maintaining it above 25 or something) or is that risky?
